X-Session was a music group that was founded in 1995 and consisted of the duo Gene Thomas (real name: Gunther Thomas) and Gina Brondeel. They became a fixture in Belgian dance music, more specifically in the 'pop-dance' genre.

Biography[edit]

In 1995 there was a first single, which was not a hit. That first hit came in 1996 with their third single "Bang Bang", which spent more than 26 weeks in the Belgian charts. But the successor "To the Sky" also became a hit in the charts. In 1997, an initial member ('Cassia') left the group for family reasons, to be replaced by Brondeel. Under the impulse of their manager, a series of foreign performances also started in France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Japan and New York.

Thomas and Brondeel's first single together was "Say Yeah", other hits were "Pump It", "The Sound" as well as the ballad "Baby, It's You". These hits were collected on the debut CD A Trip to Xanigy.

In 1999 the hit "On and On" came on the market, for which they received a Donna Award in 2000. The successor to this hit was "Hot Shot". In addition to the single "Welcome to My World", which became a big hit, a second album By Me was released. At the same time, they exchanged their record company Arcadia Music Company for EMI and released the single "Boogieman". The last hit of 2000 was Number 1. Since 1999 the regular dancer Serge Mungiele of X-Session has also been a part.

2001 started with the single "Destiny", the clip of which (subtitled Indiana Gene) was recorded in Egypt. With this single, they won the Donna Award again at the end of March 2001.

A third album was released in 2001 and was called Back to Basics; in addition to the twelve songs themselves, it also contains video clips and a music program. Meanwhile, Thomas started work as a television presenter and got his own program on TMF Vlaanderen entitled "Gene Machine". Brondeel also appeared on TV in a role in the program "Thuis" as the character 'Fanya'. The 2001 summer single became "All Day, All Night".

A year later, in May 2002, another single followed: "Get Your Rox Off", which became another hit. The single "Evil Superstars" followed in mid-November, along with a new album (a double album) entitled "7". Here, '7' stands for the 7th anniversary of X-Session; it also marked the end of X-Session at the end of 2002.

In addition to the two Donna Awards mentioned above, the group also won two TMF Awards as a group, Thomas also received an award in the "Best Singer" category.

Meanwhile, Thomas and Brondeel successfully started their solo careers.

In the fall of 2009, the group announced its comeback.[1] Thomas, Brondeel and Serge will perform again from 21 November. In the meantime, they had already given a performance in "Peter Live". The first performance was in "Het Zingpaleis". There were also new singles. The first single "Automatic" was released in October. In April 2011, "Come Together" was released. At the end of October 2011, "A Brand New Start" was released.

In 2012, the group stopped again. On March 31 of the same year, the duo gave their final performance at the "MNM Back to the 90s" party.[2]

On March 31, 2018, the band had another one-off reunion on "MNM Back to the 90s & Nillies".

The band made a comeback on July 1, 2022, during Qmusic's "Foute Party".
