Xayn is search engine application that works with artificial intelligence. The application is ad-free and does not save any personal user data.[1]

The Xayn AG was founded by Leif-Nissen Lundbæk, Michael Huth and Felix Hahmann in 2017 in Berlin.[2] In the early funding stages in 2018 and 2019 Xayn raised €9.5 million.[3][4] The first mobile version of Xayn was published in December 2020 for Android and iOS.[5]

In summer 2021 Xayn announced a Series A founding round of $12 million, which was led by the Japanese investors Global Brain and Japanese telco KDDI. In combination with funding from previous backers, like the Earlybird VC (Berlin), the company accumulated a financing of $23 million.[6]

Xayn shows results in form of snippets, which the user can swipe to the right or to the left, depending on whether the information was useful or not. By learning about the user's preferences, the application builds a profile and presents personalised results.[5] The application is ad-free and uses a built-in ad blocker.[5] Xayn uses the search index of Microsoft, Wikipedia and about 300 other sources.[7]

Xayn uses user data to provide personalised search results. The AI however is not cloud-based and no data is uploaded into the applications server.[4] The AI processes the user data on the device and generates models out of the user's behaviour, which will then be encrypted and uploaded to a server.[8] The AI information is integrated into a global model, while all personal data is only saved on the device.[9]
