Y K Cheng,[1], FIStructE is a Chinese structural engineer born in 1955 in Hong Kong [1]
Early Life & Education[edit]
Y K Cheng read [Civil Engineering]] at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA from 1972-1976.
Career[edit]
In 1976 Y K Cheng joined Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Chicago, Illinois and worked under Fazlur Rahman Khan for one year helping to design skyscraper buildings. He left in 1977 to join his father Cheng Hon-kwan at H K Cheng & Partners in Hong Kong[2]. He was involved in the design of the Sun Hung Kai Centre in Hong Kong which was originally 180m tall and later heightened to 205m. He helped design the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with the Mass Transit Railway MTR tunnel directly below. He designed a number of 30-50 storey residential buildings, hospitals, hotels, industrial buildings and schools. In China he designed the Sun Dong An retail/ shopping centre in the heart of Beijing [3], and buildings in Pudong, Shanghai. Y K Cheng is a Director of Tianjin Gangjin Architects & Engineers Ltd. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong and the Council of the Hong Kong Baptist University[4] Y K Cheng was President of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2013.
