Y La Bamba is an American indie folk band from Portland, Oregon, started by Luz Elena Mendoza. The band has released 4 full-length albums, 3 of which have been released on Tender Loving Empire.
History[edit]
Luz Elena Mendoza formed Y La Bamba in 2006. Initially, she sought out specific members for the group. But, eventually the group evolved into "an on going collaboration with friends and other musicians."[1] After the release of her self recorded debut album Alida St.[2][3] Mendoza went from playing as a solo artist to touring internationally and sharing the stage with artist such as The Lumineers,[4]Thao and The Get Down Stay Down,[5] and Devotchka.[6]
Mendoza grew up with a largely latin cultural upbringing. She was "born singing mariachis of Michoacan in Southern Oregon."[7]This cultural infusion influences her music greatly. "We were in the back of the truck while my dad would drive around and pay his bills and we would be singing — you know, if it was some Vicente Fernández song or if it was a Ramón Ayala song," Mendoza says. "And mostly, it was the jams that my father listened to."[8]
Y La Bamba signed to Tender Loving Empire in 2009.[9]The group has released 4 full length albums and 2 singles in total.[10][11]The group has received warm national reception[12][13][14][15][16] and continues to perform and stay active in the Portland music community.
