Yann Brenier (born January 1, 1957) is a French mathematician. He is a CNRS Senior researcher (Directeur de recherches) at the Department of Mathematics (Département de Mathématiques et Applications) of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.[1]

Life and work[edit]

Yann Brenier obtained his PhD from Paris Dauphine University in 1982, under the supervision of Guy Chavent.[2] He began his career at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1985, as an Assistant Professor. He then joined in 1986 the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA), as a Senior Researcher. He held various senior positions at the Pierre and Marie Curie University, the University de Nice, the École Polytechnique and the École Normale Supérieure.[1]

Most of Yann Brenier's works are in the fields of partial differential equations and numerical analysis, mathematical problems of fluid mechanics and plasma physics, and optimal transport theory. He has published more than 100 research articles in leading scientific journals. In particular, Yann Brenier is the discoverer of the polar factorization theorem.[1][3]
