YingHua International School of Princeton is a private, independent, international day school located in the town of Kingston, outside of Princeton, New Jersey. It is a Mandarin Chinese immersion elementary and middle school with an accredited International Baccalaureate program. In 2019 the school had 109 co-educational enrolled students, ranging from 18 months to eighth grade. The student-to-teacher ratio is 4.5:1.[1]

YingHua's primary years program received International Baccalaureate accreditation in June 2017, the third Chinese language immersion school in the United States to do so.[2] In 2021 it was one of three Chinese immersion International Baccalaureate programs in the Northeastern United States[3] and five accredited IB primary schools in the U.S. state of New Jersey.[4]

In the summer, YingHua runs New Jersey's STARTALK program: an intensive four week Chinese immersion program developed by the University of Maryland with funding from the NSA.

History[edit]

The school was founded in 2007 as YingHua Day School, based in Lawrenceville, NJ.[5] In 2009 the school moved to Princeton, NJ and changed its name to YingHua International School.[6] In 2015, the school added five new members to its board of directors to oversee its IB accreditation process and expansion of international education programs.[7] The school also expanded to include middle school instruction in 2016, receiving accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Elementary and Secondary Schools. In August 2016, the school moved to its present location in the Laurel Avenue School in Kingston, NJ.

Built and in operation before 1910,[8] the Laurel Avenue School was renovated with an addition in 1950 and was in use as a Franklin Township elementary school until 1997. The facility housed a county education program for five years, then was unoccupied for ten years.[9] Under an arrangement with the Tuchman Foundation and Princeton International Properties, the building complex was renovated and modernized in 2016 to include a gymnasium, indoor art studio, science laboratory, library, and kitchen.[10][11] The facility was leased to the school under an arrangement with the NJ Green Acres program.[12] YingHua International School officially reopened the Laurel Avenue School for full-time classes on September 9, 2016.[13] The school's outdoor facilities include a butterfly garden, outdoor theater, and outdoor classroom; the outdoor garden is a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.[14] The adjacent field and playground are Franklin Township preserved public lands known as Kingston School Park.[15]

In 2018, two students received 1st place prizes at the 45th annual Association of Chinese Schools (ACS) conference.[16] Along with local senior citizens in the nearby Brandywine Living complex, students formed a peace sign to celebrate International Peace Day in 2018.[17] During the Covid19 pandemic, in spring of 2020, the school donated masks to local health care workers and businesses.[18] The school was profiled on NBC's 1st Look featuring notable places in the state of New Jersey in May 2021, hosted by Johnny 'Bananas' Devenanzio.[19]

The school celebrated its 14th anniversary on May 4, 2021.[3]
