From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Yoshi Oīda (笈田 ヨシ, Oīda Yoshi; * July 26th 1933 in Kōbe) is a Japanese actor and director.

Life[edit]

After studying classical forms of Japanese theater, Oīda started working with writer Mishima Yukio. In 1968, Oīda was invited to the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris by Jean-Louis Barrault, where he has lived ever since. It was here he got involved in productions by Peter Brook.[1]

From 1979 onwards, Oīda directed various plays in Germany at the Berliner Schaubühne, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, the Thalia Theater and others.

In his teachings – Oīda frequently holds workshops – he emphasises the deliberate cultivation of voice and body. His method incorporates techniques from Japanese Buddhism and Shinto as well as Japanese (Noh) theater. He believes combining voice and movement in this way leads to a higher energy than words alone.
