You Die (subtitled Scarica L'App, Poi Muori, English: Get The App, Then Die) is a 2018 Italian supernatural slasher film co-directed and co-written by Alessandro Antonaci, Daniel Lascar, and Stefano Mandalà. The movie features Erica Landolfi as the main character, and Carola Cudemo, Simone Valentino, Simone Moretto, Micol Damilano, Alice Piano, Rocco Marazzita and Daniele Marmi as the supporting cast.[1] The plot follows Asia, a college student who commences to experience disturbing and supernatural events when a random stranger downloads an app on her phone that might just be a connecting door to the world of the dead.

You Die had its world premiere at Italian theaters on October 14, 2018, which would later be followed by the Screamfest Horror Film Festival release on October 16, 2018, and other international theatrical releases.[2] The film grossed $46,647 worldwide and received mixed to negative reviews, with people comparing it to similar supernatural horrors such as It Follows and Countdown, criticizing the jumpscares and characters but also noting the effects and makeup.

Plot[edit]

A young girl named Eva nervously checks her phone as she's sitting in a subway station. She later goes to her friend's house, Milo, and he notices her friend being unsettled by something. She asks him to give her his phone, in the apparent excuse of a surprise. She locks herself in Milo's room and downloads an app called YouDie, which appears to be the cause as to why Eva is terrified. She rushedly leaves and Milo begins receiving intermittent notifications on his phone, which allow him to see ghosts through the camera.

After having lunch with her brother Filippo and his wife Claudia, who works as a psychologist, Asia returns home to her roommate Viola. Her friend Leo, who is crushing on Asia, comes over to watch a horror movie with the two girls. Viola and Asia head to a grocery store after seeing they don't have any popcorn, and there Milo approaches Asia and asks to borrow her phone for an emergency. Unbeknownst to her, he downloads YouDie and passes the app's curse onto her.

Milo's friend, Eva, is now hooking up with a random man with the intention of spreading the curse to him. She tries to download the app but fails when the guy notices what she's doing, so he drives away angrily, leaving Eva all alone on the street. Her timer runs out and she's chased by the ghosts whom trap her and subsequently rip her apart, killing Eva.

Back at home, Asia receives a YouDie notification. Leo, Asia, and Viola see ghosts through the phone’s camera, but Leo assumes You Die is an ARG game. Asia unsuccessfully tries deleting the app, which takes away one hour from the countdown. Leo suggests taking the phone to his IT friend Marco the next day, and see if they can remove the app from her phone, to which Asia agrees.

At night, Asia receives several more YouDie alerts, which make her see ghosts in reality and cause her to have a panic attack. The following day she intentionally leaves her phone behind when she goes out. The plan backfires when Asia experiences a frightening vision of Viola dying, and subsequently finds her phone in her bag. Asia returns home to angrily ask Viola why she put it in Asia’s bag. Viola tells Asia that she came back for it, which Asia does not remember.

Now worried that there might be something wrong going on with her, Asia goes to see Claudia to tell her about the YouDie app. She has yet another supernatural encounter where she sees words scarred on her arm before a ghost attacks her in Claudia’s tub. Claudia rushes to help her, and finds Asia choking herself. She threatens to call her older brother, Filippo, if the events continue happening.

Later that day, Asia and Leo head to see Marco. Marco’s dark web research connects several deaths to police reports of people who claimed to be tormented by the dead. The victims also saw scars on their bodies that they indentified as “links” to the YouDie app.

After examining his scar, Milo receives another YouDie notification. A ghost frightens Milo into dropping his phone. When the phone’s screen cracks, the timer goes down to one minute. After the timer expires, ghosts attack and kill Milo.

Marco also mentions that he found a blog about a guy who apparently survived the curse, and they video chat with him. His name is Mike, and he confirms that the only way to survive is to pass the curse to someone else every 24 hours. Mike relays the rumor that the app was created by a medium so her clients could see the dead, but it became a psychological portal to another dimension. Mike explains the app’s rules, which specify that you cannot tell new victims how the curse works, and you cannot break or replace your phone. Leo still doesn’t believe the claims that the curse is real.

Asia rushes back to her brother’s house to confront Claudia. Claudia confesses that she too is a victim of the YouDie curse. However, Claudia coldly instructs Asia to simply pass the curse as required, and warns she will tell Filippo that Asia is crazy if Asia tries explaining what is happening to her brother. Taking what Claudia said into account, Asia poses as a hooker to lure a man in as a potential victim. Asia hears his story and struggles to pass it on, but at the end, she does.

Despite what she promised Asia, Claudia tells Filippo while dining that his sister is psychotic by repeating what Asia said about YouDie, and now worried, he begins to call Asia. Leo tracks her down to apologize for his earlier behavior, and after seeing the incoming calls from her older brother, Asia asks Leo to drop her off at her brother's house. There, Filippo confronts Asia with Claudia’s claim that she needs to be institutionalized. Asia asks Filippo to take her home. Before leaving, Asia hides Claudia’s phone in Filippos’s coat pocket, and after seeing her phone nowhere to be found, Claudia has a breakdown.

When Filippo drops her sister off, he has Asia promise to commit herself to professional care the next morning. She reluctantly agrees and they say goodbye. Asia is about to enter her house but Leo interrupts her when he says he has something to confess. He admits he likes her, and they share a kiss. Once she is alone, Asia records a live video in which she explains the YouDie app’s curse while warning that no one should pass it on. Asia says, “if it’s a virus, I will be the cure.” To avoid having to spread the curse, Asia commits suicide by throwing herself out a window. Filippo and Leo find Asia dead on the street.
