Yoyogi International School is a co-educational private[1] international school in Tokyo's Yoyogi district. The school offers Pre-K through Grade 6 classes. The curriculum is based on the International Baccalaureate and is taught in English.
History[edit]
Yoyogi International School was established in 1999 by Yuko Muir, with the vision of providing the children of the international community in Tokyo with a high-quality early childhood education.[2] Yuko Muir was inspired to create a school that would nurture, yet challenge the talents and potential of each individual child, based on her own personal experience as a parent. In 2010, the School earned the membership of the Council of International Schools. In 2015, the School extended its program to incorporate a full primary education, there by expanding the school with another campus within a 3 minute walk.[3]
The school is one of the few schools in Japan to provide an entry point for 2-3 year olds for an international curriculum, and as such is a popular choice for expatriates.[4]
Curriculum[edit]
The school combines the UK National curriculum, US Common Core, US State Guidelines (New York and Massachusetts Board of Education), and National Education Technology Standards to provide students a fully enriching learning experience.[5] As an IB world school, students are offered a fully integrated PYP Program. The school also accommodates students with special needs (SSN) upon request.[6]
While the primary language of instruction is English, all students learn the Japanese language, offering two different levels, Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) and Kokugo. From Year 2 (First Grade), native Japanese students enrolled in the Kokugo program will follow the Shibuya Ward public school language program.
Yoyogi International School also provides a rigorous English as a Second Language (ESL) program to support students who need extra English language classes.
Accreditation[edit]
Yoyogi International School is recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization as an IB World School.[7] The school also holds membership to the Council of International Schools.[8]
