Bibliography[edit]

Monograph Skira, Yuriy, They Were Called Upon: the Monks of the Studite order and the Holocaust: monograph. Kyiv: Dukh i Litera, 2019. 272 p. (In Ukrainian)

Skira's research on the history of rescue of Jews by the clergy and monks of the Greek-Catholic Church during the Holocaust resulted in the publication They Were Called Upon: The Monks of the Studite Order and the Holocaust (Покликані: Монахи Студійського Уставу та Голокост. Київ: Дух і Літера, 2019). The monograph examines the activity of the monks of the Studite Order regarding the rescue of Jews during the Holocaust on the territory of the Lviv archeparchy of the Greek Catholic Church. The author provides answers to a variety of questions associated with the concealment of Jews: he illustrates the motives, methods and risks for them and their protectors; he dispels myths which came about due hitherto inadequate knowledge regarding local conditions and rescuers’ options. The monograph clarifies historical facts and establishes a complex view of the Studite Monks participation in rescue efforts, which occurred on the initiative of their archimandrite, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, resulting in several hundred adults and children being saved.

The book was published by one of the best humanitarian publishers in 2019 according to the Ukrainian PEN club.
