Yves Amu Klein (born in Nice on August 6, 1962) is a French-born, U.S. Arizona-based artist who makes robotic sculptures. He is the son of Nouveau réalisme painter Yves Klein and German-French artist Rotraut Uecker [Wikidata].[1][2]

Octofungi (1996) AI "Livings Sculpture": A robotic artwork driven by memory shape alloyed (MSA) with an emulated neural network for "brain"

Klein was born two months after the death of his father and lived in Paris in his toddler years. He then moved with his mother, Rotraut, and his stepfather Daniel Moquay, to Ibiza in Spain.[3][4] There, with his younger brothers Georges and David Moquay, he had opportunities to explore the landscape and marine fauna of the island which have been a source of inspiration for his robotic and 3D printed art works.

By the age of 12, Klein and his family returned to France. In Paris, after college, Klein started to study architecture and design as well as what then called cybernetics or theory of complex systems. Today, this discipline is commonly known as Systems Theory. After completing his mandatory military service, Klein moved to Colorado (USA) to learn English.[5] A few months later, he moved to Arizona where his family and half sister Loraine had settled, and Klein started his studies in computer science at the Arizona State University. He met his future wife, artist Kathy Papciak, and decided to study art and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art. They have a daughter Joseffa. Yves and Kathy divorced in 2006.[6]

Klein being attracted by science and technology, as well as art, decided to create Living Sculpture,[7] an environment where he could combine both fields to create robotic artworks.[8] "Octofungi", was the artist's attempt to develop an evolving autonomous art form.[9][10] Klein's intelligent sculptures interact with the audience.[11] Klein's later work includes "Lili-Pods", a set of small floating solar-powered sculptures that communicate over electromagnetic and infrared and use artificial evolution to adapt to each other over time.[12]

More recently, Klein has focused his attention to astronomy and digital works to add to his robotic art creations. Klein regularly organizes astronomy and art events for his friends.[13] Currently he resides with his partner Anna Vivette, a coloratura soprano opera singer and their daughter Amélie.[14][15][16]

Klein has had numerous international, as well as local, art exhibits showing sculptures such as "Absorbing Guitar", "Octofungi", "Bella", "Flexicoatle", as well as some happenings such as the "Radiation Experiment I,II and III".[17]

What makes Yves work unique is his approach using science and technology to create sculptures that exhibits behavioral and life like characteristics, making and some time inventing tools to produce the different stages of construction of the artwork paying not only attention to the external appearance but also the inner workings of the pieces.

To make his digital images Yves would build robotically controlled half meter telescope and microscope to create his images that he then combine in creative ways to create esoteric imagery often carrying multiple meanings with a touch of humor. More recently he build 3D color printers to create is body of 3D printed works called "Fractured World" exhibited in Tucson.

Yves Amu Klein has been exhibited in prestigious places like the Lugano Museum In Switzerland and Scottsdale Museum, as well as well known galleries like "Walter Storms Gallery" in Germany and "Air de Paris" in Paris. He also have been published in books from MIT, reputable magazine and news papers. Yves is part of a small group of artist around the world like Ken Rinaldo, Peter Coppin, Ted Krueger, Richard Pell, Eric Paulos, Joel Slavton, Bill Vorn and L.P. Demers in the 80 and 90 to present times that explored how art science and technology can merge using neural networks, genetic programing, artificial life and many other processes to go beyond kinetic art to emerging behavioral and interactive art as described by professor of intermedia in the School of Art, Dan Collins.
