The Zagros monitor, Varanus nesterovi, is a large species of desert monitor, of the subgenus Psammosaurus together with the desert monitor (V. griseus). It has a stout snout, on which its nostrils are placed up high. It has extruding neck scalation similar to that of a roughneck monitor (V. rudicollis) and a laterally compressed tail with a double-keeled dorsal crest throughout its length. Its geographical range is restricted to the western and southwestern margin of the Zagros mountain range. Its color is somewhere between orange and tan, with black blotches on its back, as well as black stripes. This species was discovered in 2015.
