Zakir Hossain Raju (Bengali: জাকির হোসেন রাজু) is a Bangladeshi academic and filmmaker. He currently serves as the Head of the Media and Communication department at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB).[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Raju was born and raised in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mass Communication from the University of Dhaka. Later, he earned his Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from La Trobe University in Australia.[2]

Academic career[edit]

Throughout his academic career, Raju has held various significant positions, including Research Fellow at Transparency International Bangladesh in 2005, Ford Foundation ASIA Fellow at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur in 2007, and Curriculum Advisor for Wawasan Open University in Malaysia from 2011 to 2012.[3][4][5]

Current Position and Achievements[edit]

As of now, Raju holds the position of Professor and serves as the Head of the Department of Media and Communication at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). He previously served as Dean of Social Science at IUB from 2013 to 2015. Raju is the founding Director of the King Sejong Institute, which introduced Korean language instruction in Bangladesh. In 2022, he was recognized as a Japan Foundation Fellow and Visiting Research Scholar at the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication at Waseda University in Tokyo.[6]

Raju is recognized as a prominent scholar of Bangladeshi screen industries. He has authored numerous monographs and research papers, including notable works like Bangladesh Cinema and National Identity: In Search of the Modern? Published by Routledge and Liberation war in Mass Media. Published by La Trobe University Press.[7][8][9] His publications have appeared in respected journals and anthologies like South Asian Journal, Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Arts Criticism (Chinese-language journal published by Beijing Art Academy), Cinemaya: Asian Film Journal, Bangladesh Film Archive Journal, Journal of Chinese Cinemas and The Journal of Press Institute of Bangladesh.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]

Filmography[edit]

In addition to his academic career, Raju has presence in the field of cinema. He has been involved in the scripting, production, and direction of various short films and documentaries. Some of his works have gained recognition at international film festivals across countries, including the United States, Germany, Australia, India, Malaysia, Romania, and Japan. Among his projects are Face in the Millions (1991),[17] Miles to Go (1992), Tale of a Woman (1993), Beyond the Borders (1995), Images under the Shadows (1996), and Beijing Conference and Women in Bangladesh (1998). Additionally, Raju and Piplu Khan as producer is currently engaged in the development of a film project titled Summer in Shizuoka, Winter in Dhaka.[18][19][20]

Involvement in Film Organizations and Festivals[edit]

Raju's expertise and influence in the film industry have led to his involvement in prestigious film festivals worldwide. He serves as a board member of NETPAC along with Golam Rabbany Biplob [fr] from Bangladesh and was appointed as the NETPAC jury chair for the Asian cinema category at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.[21][22] Raju played a role in the Bangladesh Short Film Forum's film society movement and served as the organization's president for a period.[23] In addition, Raju has been invited as a jury president and member in various international film festivals, including the Hawaii International Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema, and the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival with Mostofa Sarwar Farooki.[24][25][26]
