Zenreader is a Freemium reference management software and knowledge organization software developed by Leapian. It is used primarily by researchers, academics, and professionals to build a body of knowledge from a large quantity of PDF documents and draft evidence-based documents. Zenreader brings together bibliography management, PDF reading, and productivity tools into an all-in-one knowledge management tool.
History
Zenreader's name is inspired by the aim for the software to provide users with an experience of being calm, stress-free, and in control of their work.
Zenreader's development began in 2015 and was initially called Readalo. The first public alpha release was made in late 2015 and was designed to help academics go back to the original source document from the notes taken from PDF documents.
In 2016, a second public alpha release was made which included report drafting and basic bibliography and reference management features.
In 2018, Leapian, the company behind Zenreader, won an Innovate UK grant to develop algorithms that analyze digital documents to automatically reconstruct the page layout and classify content on a page using computer vision, machine learning, and natural language processing approaches[1][2]. As part of the grant project, which started in April 2018 and was completed in March 2019, the team worked on innovations in knowledge presentation visualizations.
The first beta version of Zenreader was released in January 2019.
In September 2020, Zenreader's first stable version was released, marking the move of the product from a beta software to a professional one.
