Zoffy (ゾフィー Zofī)[10] is a fictional superhero character from the Ultra Series. Zoffy first appeared in episode 39, the season finale of Ultraman to escort the titular character back to their home world after his defeat from Zetton. Being the oldest member of the Ultra Brothers (ウルトラ兄弟 Urutora Kyōdai), Zoffy seems to have a long history in the Land of Light's past, as evidenced by his Star Marks and Ultra Breasters on his shoulders and chest.
Originally a one-shot character in Ultraman, after the decision to continue the Ultra Series was made, Zoffy was turned into a recurring character that appeared in most of the succeeding series, particularly assisting a fellow Ultra Warrior. Unlike the other members of the Ultra Brothers, Zoffy lacked his own series but played a lot of pivotal role in most of his appearances. However, in Ultraman Retsuden, he served as a replacement navigator should Ultraman Zero be absent.
In Ultraman, Zoffy was voiced by Hikaru Urano (浦野 光 Urano Hikaru), who was the series' narrator from episodes 20-39 and had even voiced both Alien Zetton and Zetton in the final episode itself.[9] The voice-over role of Zoffy was given to multiple actors/voice actors during the Showa Era but in Heisei Era, starting from Ultraman Mebius, this role is permanently given to Hideyuki Tanaka (田中 秀幸 Tanaka Hideyuki), who would reprise the character in later installments.[11][12]
Zoffy's suit actor in Ultraman was Bin Furuya (古谷敏 Furuya Bin), who also portrayed Ultraman. The suit at that time had no peepholes, considering Zoffy's role in the story.[1]
Character conception[edit]
His suit was made from modifying Ultraman's Type A suit, which was previously modified into the Imitation Ultraman in episode 18.[13][14] The mask however was made using the same sculpt from Ultraman Type C's suit but lacks peepholes, due to Zoffy's role in the series. Bin Furuya (Ultraman's suit actor) portrayed Zoffy during the scene while the weakened Ultraman was portrayed as an empty suit. The suit was finally reverted to Ultraman once the filming ended for attraction purposes.[1][15][14] The inclusion of Zoffy to the rest of the Ultra Series was in order to create the Ultra Brothers (ウルトラ兄弟 Urutora Kyodai) group, starting from his appearance in Ultraman Ace.[16]
As further distinction to the Ultraman suit, Zoffy sports silver buttons on his chest and shoulder areas. These were explained in-universe as Star Marks (スターマーク Sutā Māku)[17] on his chest being his badge of honors for his and the Ultra Breastars (ウルトラブレスター Urutora Buresutā) on his shoulders are power amplifiers.[18]
Naming[edit]
In pre-1984 Ultra Series and magazine publications, Zoffy's name in Katakana was "ゾフィ", the Japanese letter itself lacking an elongation Kana.[15] The romanization of his name is alternatively spelled as "Zophy".[19] He is also sometimes regarded as "Ultraman Zoffy" (ウルトラマンゾフィー Urutoraman Zofī) by fans, as well as the aforementioned movie due to how generic the "Ultraman" title is for his species. This is acknowledged in-universe by his feature film in 1984.[20]
Appearances[edit]
Ultraman[edit]
After Ultraman's demise at the hands of Zetton (who was later defeated by the SSSP themselves), Zoffy met the Ultra Warrior (ウルトラ戦士 Urutora Senshi) for the first time and identify himself, ordering him to return to the Land of Light. However Ultraman refused, knowing that his life was connected to Hayata and their separation would result in the man's death. Seeing how responsible Ultraman was towards the young man, Zoffy revealed that he carried two life forces with him and donated one to Hayata, as well as separating them, giving the young man another chance at life at the expense of his experiences with Ultraman. Soon, the two left Earth for their homeworld, in Nebula M78.[21] This is a rather different finish to the series than stated in the English dub, which states that Zoffy chastises Ultraman for being easily defeated by Zetton (which he claimed to be easier) and Hayata as well separated but retains his full memories of Ultraman, along the fact that the giant shall return to Earth.
Revive! Ultraman on the other hand gives an alternate ending to the series 29 years after the series finale, where Zoffy recombines Hayata and Ultraman after giving the former another life-forces.
Subsequent appearances in Showa Era Ultra Series[edit]
- The Return of Ultraman (1971): Zoffy was mentioned by Alien Bat in the final episode as one of the members of the Ultra Brothers. As revealed in the magazine, Zoffy was responsible for Jack's descent into Earth in 1971.[22]
- Ultraman Ace (1972): In episode 1, he would later would later join the Ultra Brothers, a group of Ultra Warriors dedicated to protecting the galaxy and at first witnessing the arrival of the team's new member, Ace. Although he does assisted Ultraman Ace in episodes 5 and 35 with various devices against Yapool's Terrible Monsters, such as Ultra Converter (ウルトラコンバーター Urutora Konbātā) and Ultra Magic Ray (ウルトラマジックレイ Urutora Majikku Rei),[19][23] there are also times when he is in trouble, as shown when he and his Ultra Brothers were captured by Yapool in episodes 13 and 14 and by Alien Hipporito in 26 and 27.[24][25][26] During his capture by Ace Killer, his M87 Ray was stolen by the cyborg as part of its attacks. In the first episode, Zoffy's suit was modified from Ultraman Jack, while 18 pieces of silver buttons were glued to emulate his Star Marks and Ultra Breastars.[27] His voice actors were Osamu Saka (阪 脩 Saka Osamu, 5), Osamu Ichikawa (市川 治 Ichikawa Osamu, 13, 14) and Keisuke Yamashita (山下 啓介 Yamashita Keisuke, 23).
- Ultraman Taro (1973): Appeared in episodes 1, 25, 33, 34 and 40. In episode 1, he was among the Ultra Brothers that witnessed the fusion if Ultraman Taro and Kotaro. During Birdon's attack in episodes 18 and 19, he replaced Taro when he was injured from the bird monster's attack but was defeated as well until a healed Taro took over the battle and defeated Birdon with the King Bracelet. Zoffy was taken for healing by Mother of Ultra and was fully recovered when the Ultra Brothers deliver the Ultra Bell to the Ultra Tower in episode 25.[28] In 33 and 34, he and the rest of the Ultra Brothers joined Taro on Earth while fighting against Alien Temperor. In episode 40, he fought Tyrant on Neptune, but was defeated in the end. Taro's King Bracelet was originally meant to be used by Zoffy had he survived his fight with Birdon.[29] While not mentioned in the series, an academic journal revealed that Zoffy was a school principal in the Land of Light. Noticing Taro's excellent performances in school and exploits in outer space after his graduation, Zoffy inducted Taro as the sixth member of the Ultra Brothers and was responsible for sending the young to Earth in 1973.[30] In episodes 33 and 34, Zoffy was voiced by Shinya Kashima (鹿島 信哉 Kashima Shinya).
- Ultraman Leo (1974): Appeared in episodes 38 and 39. He and the Ultra Brothers tried to confront Astra, who had stolen the Ultra Key from the Land of Light until he was revealed to be an impostor named Alien Babarue by Ultraman King. He was voiced by Satohiro Sakai (酒井 郷博 Sakai Satohiro).[5]
- The 6 Ultra Brothers vs. the Monster Army (1974 (Thailand)/1979 (Japan))
- Ultraman Zoffy: Ultra Warriors vs. the Giant Monster Army (1984)
- Ultraman Story (1984): In this movie, Zoffy is voiced by Takashi Tsuda (津田 喬 Tsuda Takashi).
Heisei Era[edit]
- Ultraman Neos (2001):[6][31] Zoffy was responsible for rescuing Genki Kagura from an explosion at a space station. He soon had Neos merge with the youth in a similar manner to Ultraman and had Ultraseven 21 to monitor his work. In episode 11, when Neos almost died from Gurale's attack, Zoffy brought him to the Land of Light for medical treatment while severing his bonds with Kagura. He is voiced by Akitoshi Ōtaki (大滝明利 Ōtaki Akitoshi).[32]
- ULTRA N PROJECT (2004): In a prequel magazine to Ultraman: The Next, Zoffy and the rest of the Ultra Brothers tried to fight back an invasion by Dark Zagi and his monster army. He was held hostage by the black giant until Ultraman Noa rescued him and dragged Zagi away from the Land of Light.[33]
- Ultraman Mebius & Ultraman Brothers (2006): Zoffy warned his fellow Ultra Brothers on Earth of Yapool's revival. During the film's climax, he and Taro joined the battle and recharged the Mebius and the Ultra Brothers with their energies to fight U-Killersaurus Neo. With the Ultra Brothers united, they combined with Mebius to form Mebius Infinity to defeat Yapool and freed Kobe.
- Ultraman Mebius (2006-07):[34] As revealed in episode 42, years ago during Ultraman's time, SSSP member Shingo Sakomizu was assigned to the Izanami, for test flights into FTL technology. During one of these flights he was attacked by a fleet of alien ships. Sakomizu bravely fought and lured the army away from his comrades but as several blasts were about to hit him, Zoffy appeared and rescued him by destroying the fleet. This incident made him realize how much the Ultras were actually doing for humanity without them even knowing, and his testimonies upon his return were the reasons GUYS was formed and maintained, despite a lack of supposed threats from aliens or monsters for twenty five years.[35][36] In the final episode, Zoffy returned and used Captain Sakomizu as his host to assist Ultraman Mebius Phoenix Brave (whom were combined from Ultraman Mebius, Hikari and the rest of Crew GUYS) in defeating Empera. Following the battle, Zoffy ceased his bonds with Sakomizu and departed from Earth. There were two versions of Zoffy's suits in the series; the first one in episodes 15, 24 and Hikari Saga, the other one being its movie appearance and in episode 42.[37] Additionally, he was also planned to appear in episode 29 and 30, but his position was replaced with Taro.[38]
- Ultraman Mebius Side Story: Hikari Saga: Zoffy assisted Hikari against a Bemstar and offered him a place in the Inter Galactic Defense Force. Although another Bemstar made its way to Earth, the two decided to not interfere, affirming that Mebius and Crew GUYS were strong enough to handle it.[11]
- Ultraman Mebius Side Story: Ghost Reverse (2009): Zoffy made a cameo appearance in the first part of the special observing Hikari's distress message.[39]
- Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy (2009): From Mebius' recollection of the past, a young Zoffy was a rookie member of the Inter Galactic Defense Force, lacking the Star Marks and Ultra Breasters. At the time of Belial Revolt, Zoffy attempted to defend Ken and Marie from Belial but was thrown aside before Ultraman King sealed the evil Ultra.[39] Following Belial's escape, Zoffy was among a numbers of Ultra Warriors that tried to stop Belial from advancing to the Plasma Spark. He soon became the last line of defense in front of the Plasma Spark Tower's front door, facing of against his former friend but soon defeated when Belial stomped him to the ground. When a huge winter afflicted the Land of Light, Zoffy was among the Ultra Warriors frozen from the storm before he was freed when the Plasma Spark returned to its proper place, subsequently replenishing the energy he lost from his battle.[40] In the English dub, he is voiced by Phil Milner.[41] Zoffy's guest appearance in the past was under suggestion by Koichi Sakamoto.[42]
- Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial (2010): Zoffy was among the Inter Galactic Defense Force members that studied the Darklop's remains and donated his light to Zero's travel sphere so that the youth could travel to an alternate universe.[43] Phil Milner reprise his voice role as Zoffy in the English dub.[41]
- Ultraman Saga DVD Special (2012): In a prologue to the 2012 movie Ultraman Saga, Zoffy appeared when Zero's energy was almost depleted while fighting Birdon and gave the Ultra Warrior his Ultra Converter, allowing the two to finish the monster with their combined attack.[44] Ultraman Ginga S Super Complete Works acknowledged that Zero's arrival in Ultraman Saga was partly under orders from Zoffy due to the increasing negative energy of a Zetton (Hyper Zetton) in that dimension.[45]
- Ultraman Retsuden/Shin Ultraman Retsuden (2011): Zoffy was one of the few characters to fill in for Ultraman Zero whenever he is absent as the show's host in episodes 35 and 86 to 90.[46] His final role as a narrator is in episode 1 of Shin Ultraman Retsuden alongside Ultraman and Ultraseven.[12]
- Ultraman Ginga (2013): Alongside the Ultra Brothers, Zoffy was among the combatants of Dark Spark War, fighting against Zetton but soon cursed into a Spark Doll by Dark Lugiel when he and the rest of the Space Garrisons tried to protect Taro (thus making him the only Spark Doll to retain sentience in the series). In aftermath of Ginga's battle with Lugiel, Zoffy and other Spark Dolls were freed from their curse and return to space.
- Ultraman Ginga S (2014): As revealed in episode 54 of Shin Ultraman Retsuden, Zoffy and the rest of the Ultra Brothers donated their powers to Taro when he raced to Earth after detecting a new threat. In Zoffy's case, he donated his M87 Ray and Z-Ray, which soon became one of Ultraman Ginga Strium's powers.[47] After his job on Earth ended, Taro returned the loaned powers back to the Ultra Brothers.
- Ultraman Orb (2016): A long time ago, when Maga-Orochi rampaged on Earth, Zoffy arrived and sealed the monster, as well as rescuing its prisoner Tamayura.[48][49] In the present day, Jugglus Juggler unsealed Maga-Orochi through Ultraman Belial's card, countering Zoffy's card in turn. Tamayura soon reappeared and gave Gai/Ultraman Orb the cards of Zoffy and Belial. While Gai has no problems with Zoffy, he was never able to call out Belial's power due to the cards refusal but Tamayura's sacrifice allowed Gai to utilize the card in full anger and gave birth to his new form, Thunder Breastar, therefore defeating Maga-Orochi.[50][51] During the final episode of the series, Zoffy and the other Ultra Fusion Cards in Gai's possession transformed into physical projections of their owner to assist Ultraman Orb in delivering the finishing blow to Magata no Orochi while Juggler hold off the monster long enough to expose its weak spot.
- Ultra Fight Orb (2017): Jack, Seven and Zoffy had sent Zero to investigate the mysterious darkness from Planet Yomi. Fearing that something happened to him, the three flew to the planet and saved him from four revived monsters. After Orb's failure in pursuing Reibatos, Zoffy and Jack tried to pursue Reibatos before Orb, Zero and Seven arrived, the young Ultra using his new form Emerium Slugger to destroy the necromancer once and for all. Zoffy offered Orb a position in the Inter Galactic Defense Force and even a set of Star Marks, but the wanderer declined politely and departed from the Land of Light.[52] Zoffy's fight and victory against the revived Birdon is a nod to their previous fight in Ultraman Taro.[53]
- Ultraman Geed (2017): In the cold opening of episode 1, Zoffy was among the members of the Inter Galactic Defense Force that fought against Belial's reign of terror on Earth. After the evil Ultra detonated his bomb, destroying the entire universe and King merged with it to undo the damage, Zoffy's powers were contained in the Little Star of a monster named Gubila, granting it the ability to spray a paralyzing electric shock.[54] This was later on harvested by Ultraman Geed, obtaining the Zoffy Capsule (ゾフィーカプセル Zofī Kapuseru) and allowing him to execute 87 Flasher when assuming the form of the Royal Mega-Master.[55]
- Ultraman Geed The Movie (2018): At the height of Gillvalis' assault on Planet Earth, Zoffy notified the Ultimate Force Zero through his Ultra Sign during their fight against several Galactron units.[56]
Reiwa era[edit]
- Ultra Galaxy Fight: New Generation Heroes (2019): Zoffy and the Ultra Brothers had previously fought against Ultra Dark Killer by donating their energies for Taro to perform Ultra Dynamite.

Shingo Sakomizu (サコミズ・シンゴ Sakomizu Shingo) is the former captain of Crew GUYS in Ultraman Mebius. Despite his seriousness, Sakomizu has occasional comedic moments.[59] At the start of the series, Sakomizu and Misaki were the only officers in Crew GUYS to be aware of Mirai Hibino's identity until this was disclosed in episode 30. Appearing in his 40 years old, Sakomizu was the captain of the SSSP from Ultraman while operating in a different branch in outer space. Sakomizu piloted the experimental space craft Izanami (イザナミ) and was caught in a crossfire between Zoffy and the alien saucers. His use of the Izanami resulted with Urashima effect (ウラシマ効果 Urashima Kōka) which slowed down his aging process despite being in a similar age to former TDF veteran Takenaka.[60]
At the start of Mebius, Sakomizu took the role of the captain when most of the original team members (save for Ryu) were killed in Dinozaur's first attack. In the three part final episode, Sakomizu was revealed to be the obsured General Director of Crew GUYS Japan, whose reason of becoming the captain is to fight alongside the Ultraman. In the final confrontation against Alien Empera, Sakomizu unleashed the Final Meteor Spacium Redoublizer (スペシウム・リダブライザー Supeshiumu Ridaburaizā) and merged with Zoffy to assist Mebius Phoenix Brave (who fused with every member of Crew GUYS Japan) against the Empera, finally put an end to his reign of terror. Following Mebius' departure from Earth, Sakomizu surrendered the role of Crew GUYS captain to Ryu.[61]
He was portrayed by the late Minoru Tanaka (田中 実 Tanaka Minoru).[62][63] When asked about his opinion of Crew GUYS, Minoru answered that he is in a position to watch over the members, and said team being a place to grow.".[64]
In other media[edit]
Anime and Manga[edit]
- In the 1975 manga The Ultraman, Zoffy was one of the surviving Ultra Warriors as they fled from Jackal and his armies in the latter's attempted genocide of the Ultra race. With the rest of the Ultra Brothers dead, they were forced to take refuge on Earth in human forms while Jackal's armies attacked nearby civilians in search for the Inter Galactic Defense Force captain. When Melos appeared and decimated the Jackal army on Earth, Zoffy and 28 other Ultra Warriors joined Melos in storming Planet Jackal and donned the Cosmo Techtor (コスモテクター Kosumo Tekutā) when Melos was defeated, distracting the Jackal Army long enough for the Ultra Brothers to revive and fire their finishers on Jackal. The manga was adapted into one of the many shorts of Japan Animator Expo, where Zoffy was voiced by Kōichi Yamadera (山寺 宏一 Yamadera Kōichi).[65][66]
- Ultraman Ace is one of the characters of the manga series, Ultraman Chotoshi Gekiden. In the 1996 OVA, he is voiced by Masashi Ebara (江原 正士 Ebara Masashi).[67]
- Ultra Super Legend (1981): Zoffy was thrown into the black hole by a modified Ace Killer of the Guar Army. After being rescued by an Andro people Sezar, Zoffy was given the Cosmo Techtor to block the adverse effect of the black hole and christen himself as Andro Melos (アンドロメロス Andoro Merosu). Zoffy would deliver the Cosmo Techtor to Sezar's son, Benoit, who would become Andro Melos in the duration of the 1980s tokusatsu of the same name.[68]
- The 2003 manga Ultraman THE FIRST (ja:ウルトラマン THE FIRST) has Zoffy's role remained the same, but instead of only Hayata losing his life, Fuji was involved as well, having died in the battle when Alien Baltan (the manga's antagonist) was revealed to have possessed her all along. Nonetheless, Zoffy revived both Hayata and Fuji before escorting Ultraman back to M78.[69]
- In 2005 manga Ultraman Story 0 (ja:ウルトラマンSTORY 0) (which served as alternate interpretations of the Ultra Warriors' pasts), Zoffy is depicted as a young Ultra Warrior being freshly bathed from the Plasma Spark and mutated into a giant of light. As a hero, Zoffy went patrolling and came across a village in planet that was plagued by monsters. During that time, Zoffy not only learn to control his newfound powers, but also to gain the villagers' cooperation and taught them to never give up. In the end, he was praised for his bravery and departed once his job had done. It is also in this manga that Zoffy is the giant statue that was revealed in episode 7 of Ultraman, although the original episode considered the statue to be Noa.[70]
- Initially lacking a counterpart, the 2011 manga series Ultraman features Shin Hayata wearing an upgraded version of his prototype Ultraman Suit, designated Ultraman Suit Z. The armor bears resemblance to the original Ultra Brothers leader Zoffy and is also a playable character of the 2020 smartphone game Ultraman:Be Ultra.[71] Coincidentally, the 2019 Netflix anime adaptation of the manga has Shin Hayata voiced by Hideyuki Tanaka, the current voice actor of Zoffy himself.[72]
Novel[edit]
- The novel adaptation of Ultraman, written by Tetsuo Kinjo in August 1967, Zoffy's role is historically the same as the TV series. Aside from that, the novel incorporates leftover plans from the series which never made it into the final cut, such as having Alien Mefilas form an alliance with past aliens, and having Geronimon revive Gomora and Red King.[73]
Stage shows[edit]
- In the first live stage of Ultraman Festival 2016, Zoffy appeared and has a conversation with Ultraman. This was Hikaru Urano's final reprisal as the character before his death in 2018.[74]
Reception[edit]
Popularity[edit]
Despite Zoffy's position as a side character, he is remembered well by others. Mitsuko Hoshi, actress of Yuko Minami from Ultraman Ace, almost compared her fans as Zoffy for remembering her despite her character's sudden departure in the middle of the series.[75][76] The scene in episode 18 of Ultraman Taro, which involves Zoffy's head being burned by one of Birdon's flames was one of the few influential scenes in the Ultra Series. This scene is called "Fire Head" (ファイヤーヘッド Faiyā Heddo) by certain fans (although that name as well acknowledged by Tsuburaya Productions) and is among the few internet memes in the Japanese culture. In fact, this scene was thought to be an accident until Tsuburaya revealed that it was in fact planned from the start.[77]
In the Ultra Series' 45th anniversary, Zoffy scored the sixth place in an Ultra Hero popularity ranking, but in another Ultra Hero poll in 2013, his position falls into 12th place after losing to Ultraman Tiga.[78][79]
Merchandise[edit]
Zoffy's soft vinyl doll had been sold several times by Bandai since 1990's. In 2012, Zoffy was given his first release as a highly articulated action figure in the ULTRA-ACT toyline, which also comes with the infamous "Fire Head" effect part.[77] In that same year, the Andro Melos figure was release as a pre-order exclusive item in P-Bandai. The advertisement also encouraged to switch head using the aforementioned Zoffy figure, which was used to represent him using the Cosmo Techtor in the 1981 manga Ultra Super Legend.[80][81]
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ultra Series, Zoffy got his second release in November 2016 as a pose-able action figure in the S.H. Figuarts line for him to pose alongside Ultraman.[82][83] In 2019, Hour Treasure announced the release of Melos figure in Cosmo Techtor from the 1975 The Ultraman manga, set to be released in May 2020. The figure comes with Melos' original head and Zoffy to represent the latter's impersonation in the manga.[84]
