Zombie Dog (ゾンビ犬 zombi-inu) is a fictional creature from Capcom's Resident Evil series. It first appeared in the video game Resident Evil 2 and has since appeared outside of video games, including in film. Zombie Dog is a domesticated canine infected with the t-Virus through its secondary method, namely the ingestion of infected food or organisms. They are separate from the Cerberus; the latter was created specifically as a Bio Organic Weapon, while zombie dogs are viewed and treated as unintended side-effects of t-Virus dispersal and are thus classified as irregular mutants.
Development
Like their B.O.W. relatives, the zombie dogs retain much of their former agility, with a noticeable increase in durability and aggression. In most cases, potential prey should listen for the sound of padding paws as a clue to their presence, with a growling warning that it has become aware of the player and is preparing to attack. They will let out a pained yelp when killed.[1]
Akin to the canine related t-Virus mutation is a general necrosis in their left eye orbit, leaving their left eye visibly bulging out of their otherwise savage but proportional facade, making for an even more fearsome appearance.[2] The Raccoon City Destruction Incident is the only known event in which a non-doberman was infected – a labrador. The reason for the frequency of Dobermans being found infected was due to Chief Brian Irons' suggestion to the K9 unit that the breed be used as the police dog for the Raccoon Police Department.[3]
Appearances
In Resident Evil series
Zombie Dog originates from the Nintendo and Capcom video game Resident Evil 1, an entry in their long-running Resident Evil series of video games,[4] with jumping out of a window as its introduction.[5] Zombie Dog later appeared in the follow-up, Resident Evil 2,[6] Resident Evil 3,[7] Resident Evil 4,[8] Resident Evil 5[9] and on Resident Evil 6. As a zombie dog always attacks the protagonist with its pack.[10] Zombie Dog returned in Resident Evil 2 Remake, as a remaster of the game to prove and make the graphics look more modern, including the creature.[11] Zombie Dog also appeared in Resident Evil Project Resistance,[12] Resident Evil Outbreak,[13] and Resident Evil Outbreak File #2.[14]
Resident Evil film series
Zombie Dog appeared in the whole season of Resident Evil film,[15][16] and Resident Evil: Vendetta.[17]
Reception
The Zombie dog has received positive attention mostly due to its jumpscare introduction as part of Capcom's efforts to make the series a truly horror experience. GameRant listed the Zombie Dog as being among the top 9 most painful creatures to deal with.[18] Kotaku claimed that the Zombie dog jumping out of a window is one of the greatest video game jumpscares,[19] The Guardian claimed that the dogs jumping out of a window with a full pack on a corridor is a truly terrifying experience.[20] while Destructoid called it an amazingly scary sequence.[5] GameRant also ranked Zombie Dogs as being among the top 19 scariest monsters.[21] According to Gamespot, Akuma from Street Fighter should be placed in Resident Evil 2 to deal with the zombies, including Zombie Dog, also stating that "this addition could prove a humorous and unexpected way to experience the horrors of Raccoon City".[22]
