History[edit]

Zoro, as well as its sister company in Japan, Monotaro, were founded by W. W. Grainger in an effort to serve the small-business market through online-only transactions. Grainger calls this the Endless Assortment Model, designed to profit from a broader array of products served through an online marketplace.[4]

The first building was located in Mundelein, Illinois. Since then, Zoro.com has moved its headquarters to neighboring Buffalo Grove, Illinois., and expanded to other locations, including Downtown Chicago and Janesville, Wis.[5] In January 2023 Zoro signed a 41,875-square-foot office lease expansion at Accenture Tower in Chicago. [6] Following its inception in 2011, Zoro changed its name from Zoro Tools to Zoro to reflect the focus on a wider assortment of business supplies and products. By 2016 Zoro hit the one million SKU mark live on the site.
