John Paul Marchand (born 1953) is an American politician serving as the current Mayor of Livermore, California[1] since 2011. Though the office is nonpartisan, Marchand is a member of the Democratic Party.
Early life and education
He was born and raised in Hayward, California,[2] living there for many years before moving to Livermore in 1985. He earned his bachelor's degree in biological sciences from the California State University, East Bay.
Career
By trade, he is an oceanographer, chemist, and actor. In the 1990s, he became a member of the American Water Works Association.[3]
For fifteen years, Marchand worked as an elected representative to the Zone 7 Water Agency Board of Directors, serving twice as the board's president. Marchand was also the founding member of the Livermore Cultural Arts Commission and served on Livermore's General Plan Review Committee.
By profession, Marchand is a chemist specializing in water quality. He started his career teaching marine biology and later worked for over thirty years as a drinking water quality chemist, specializing in microbiology, organic chemistry, and distribution system trouble-shooting. He has since served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Marine Science Institute and was a founding member of the Small Systems Inter-Agency Outreach Committee.
