The Berlin derby is the name given to any association football match between two clubs in Berlin, Germany, but has more recently referred to the derby between Union Berlin and Hertha BSC.

History[edit]

In the Bundesliga and the second Bundesliga, duels between Berlin clubs were not uncommon at the time of the division of Germany, so there were seasons in both leagues between 1977 and 1990 in which Hertha BSC, Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin, Tennis Borussia Berlin and / or the SC Charlottenburg were represented together in one division. Visits by Hertha fans to the An der Alten Försterei stadium were not uncommon, while in return in March 1979 Union supporters attended the quarter-final second leg of the UEFA Cup against FK Dukla Prague in Prague and cheered on Hertha, and there were also fan articles with the reputation "Hertha and Union - One Nation".[1]

After months of social unrest in Berlin, the Berlin Wall was torn down on 9 November 1989 and access between the two sides of the city was allowed for the first time in almost three decades. Just a few months later, on 27 January 1990, came the first match between Hertha and Union in 28 years. An official attendance of 51,270 was recorded at the Olympiastadion, although the actual total is believed to be higher. It turned into a celebration of Berlin. [2] . However, after the German reunification, the friendship cooled down and a rivalry gradually developed between Hertha BSC and 1. FC Union.

The first meeting between the two clubs in a competitive game followed in the Bundesliga season 2010/11, whereby mutual insults before these games were evidence of the no longer existing fan friendship. The first leg on September 17, 2010 in the An der Alten Försterei stadium ended with a division of points between the host Union, who went into the game as an outsider, and the favorite Bundesliga relegated Hertha BSC, while the second leg in the Olympic Stadium ended with a 2:1 - victory of the iron from Koepenick. At the end of the 2010/11 season, Hertha rose again to the Bundesliga, but in 2012 the direct relegation followed, so that again two games took place between the club from Berlin Westend and the club from Köpenick. In the first leg on September 3, 2012, again at the An der Alten Försterei stadium, Hertha BSC won 2-1 and thus won their first competitive game against the Unioners. The second leg in Berlin's Olympic Stadium on February 11, 2013 again ended with a division of points.

At the end of the season, Hertha BSC rose again to the Bundesliga and was able to re-establish itself there, while FC Union rose to the German upper house for the first time in its club history in 2019, which is the first time since German reunification that an overall Berlin derby took place in the top German division . 1. FC Union won the first leg on November 2, 2019 at home with a penalty from Sebastian Polter 1–0 in stoppage time, and Hertha BSC won the second leg at the Olympic Stadium 4–0. Both clubs held their class at the end of the season. In the following season, the first leg took place in the Olympic Stadium and Hertha BSC won again, this time 3–1.
