The 1953 Bay of Plenty earthquake struck the upper North Island on September 29 at 1:36 pm. With a depth of 273 km, it is one of the deepest earthquakes recorded in New Zealand.[1] Shaking was felt as far south as northern Otago. Recorded intensities from the tremor reached VI (Strong) on the Mercalli intensity scale in eastern Bay of Plenty and northern Hawke's Bay.
