1990s nostalgia is nostalgia for certain aspects of the 1990s. 1990s nostalgia is a form of decade nostalgia. 1990s retro is retro related to the 1990s.

Duration and Demographics

1990s nostalgia seems to have appeared roughly after the turn of the millennium. The 1999 song "Summer Girls" by pop group "LFO" references many pop culture trends of the late 80s and early 90s. Such as New Kids on the Block and Home Alone.

Know Your Meme cites the start of a broader 1990s nostalgia wave as early as 2001. With the release of the British miniseries I Love the '90s. Followed by several YouTube slideshows with titles akin to "Remembering the '90s" released around 2006-2007.[1]

The term 90s kid refers to someone whose formative years were roughly in the 1990s. Albeit some online users claim it instead refers to people who were born in the 1990s.

The first usage of the term "90s kid" could be attributed to actress and recording artist Jennifer Love Hewitt in the song "90s Kids" off her 1992 album Love Songs (Jennifer Love Hewitt album). The first usage of "90s kid" as a nostalgic descriptor, however, could be attributed to the website 90sKids, which opened on July 22nd, 1999[2]. The site mainly specializes in 1990s gaming culture. The phrase "90s Kids" would reach it's biggest peak throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s.

The 30 year old boomer

The 30 year old boomer is a meme portraying a middle-aged variant of the Wojak partaking in 1990s to early 2000s nostalgia. The meme was popularized around 2018 through the 4chan greentext meme ">That 30 year old boomer who ____".[3]

1990s nostalgia music genres include golden age hip-hop, new jack swing, teen pop, eurobeat, grunge and skate punk.

Film

The 2018 film Mid90s is centered on a 13 year old boy in 1996. Director Jonah Hill based the film on his own experiences in 1990s Los Angeles.[4][5]

2024 saw the release of the horror comedy film Y2K. The film stars Jaeden Martell and Rachel Zegler as teens attempting to survive a fictionalized, exaggerated version of the year 2000 problem.
