The 2008–09 season was Gateshead's first season in the Conference North and their first at this level since the introduction of the Conference North & South in 2004.

Gateshead qualified for the Conference North Playoffs after finishing the season in second place, five points behind league winners Tamworth. Gateshead were promoted to the Conference National on 8 May 2009 after beating Telford United 1–0 in the playoff final.
