On 3 June 2014, due to the conflict between police and local residents about Yarchagumba royalty, a clash occurred resulted 2 deaths (Thundup Lama, 48 and Phurwa Tsering, 32) and many injured in Dolpo, upper region of Dolpa district, Nepal.[1][2][3][4][5][6] The local residents have raised serious concern over the incident and accused Nepal police as the cause of it. National Human Rights Commission (Nepal) is investigating the police brutality in Dho to find the real cause of the incident.[7][8]

Background[edit]

Yarchagumba (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) is fungal infected larva of ghost moth only found in cold Himalayan regions like Dolpo of Nepal. It has huge medicinal benefits and are very expensive. Every June/July all people of the regions and also of foreign localities gather to harvest Yarchagumba. People outside of the regions have to pay levy to collect the fungus. However, recently there has been wide disputes between local residents and the government over who has the right to get the money. Following the conflict police charged the public with force including multiple gunfire which resulted 2 deaths.
