The 2014 Copa Campeonato was the second edition of the Copa Campeonato, an annual football match played between the winners of the Torneo Inicial and Torneo Final, the two league tournaments held during the 2013–14 Argentine Primera División season. The match was contested by the 2013 Torneo Inicial champions San Lorenzo and the 2014 Torneo Final winners River Plate on 24 May 2014 at the Estadio Provincial Juan Gilberto Funes, San Luis. Both teams were appearing in the competition for the first time.
San Lorenzo qualified as a result of winning the 2013 Torneo Inicial, finishing two points ahead of the second-placed team Lanús. River Plate entered the competition after winning the 2014 Torneo Final, in which they finished five points clear of rivals Boca Juniors.
Watched by a crowd of 15,000, the first half was goalless. River Plate took the lead in the 28th minute of the second half when Germán Pezzella scored. They held this lead to win the match 1–0, securing their first Copa Campeonato win on the last edition of the tournament.
Background
San Lorenzo had qualified for the match as winners of the 2013 Torneo Inicial, topping the first of the two seasonal leagues as they earned nine victories, six draws and four losses in 19 fixtures. Finishing with 33 points, they stood clear by two of Lanús, Vélez Sarsfield and Newell's Old Boys.[3] River Plate entered the competition after winning the 2014 Torneo Final. During their run in the tournament they won 11 matches and drew four to finish five points ahead of rivals Boca Juniors, Estudiantes de La Plata and Godoy Cruz.[4]
The teams had played two games during the 2013–14 season, with either team winning 1–0 at their home ground.[1]

Both teams were affected by call-ups from the Colombia national team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil. River Plate lost centre-back Éder Álvarez Balanta and striker Teófilo Gutiérrez. Manager Ramón Díaz replaced them with Ramiro Funes Mori and Daniel Villalva respectively. They were otherwise unchanged from the lineup that played Quilmes in a 5–0 win on 18 May.[5] San Lorenzo lost defender Carlos Valdés, who Edgardo Bauza replaced with Fabricio Fontanini. Forwards Ignacio Piatti and Nicolás Blandi were also ruled out due to injuries; Leandro Romagnoli and Martín Cauteruccio would be their replacements.[6]

The Argentine Football Association would ultimately grant River Plate a domestic cup title, stemming from their win.[10] They also qualified for the Supercopa Argentina and the Copa Sudamericana.[11]
