The 2017–18 Porin Ässät season was the club's 42nd season in the SM-liiga and the 50th season at the top-level of ice hockey in Finland. Ässät's previous season had ended in 7th place in the regular season. Ässät's regular season started on September 9 with a home match against Ilves and ended on March 10 with a home match against HIFK. Ässät finished eighth in the regular season and faced Satakunnan derby rival team Rauman Lukko in the first round of the playoffs. Ässät went on from the series with 2–0 wins. In the semi-finals, Ässät faced Oulun Kärpät. Ässät lost the series 4–1.

Off-season[edit]

At the end of the 2016-17 season, one goaltender, two defenders and 11 attackers left Ässät, five of which were centers. One of the players went to the KHL, one to the French Ligue Magnus, one to Mestis and six to other SM-liiga clubs. One goaltender, two defenders and seven forwards, one of which is a center, replaced the lost players. Four of the players who arrived came from other SM-liiga clubs. One forward who left after the 2016–2017 season later returned to Ässät during the 2017–2018 season, when Jarno Kärki terminated his contract with Tappara in November 2017. Ässät also acquired another player in the middle of the season, when forward Sakari Salminen signed a contract with Ässät in November 2017. Ässät continued its player acquisitions in January 2018, when defender Tommi Taimi from the KHL first joined the team, and soon after that, forward Tuomas Huhtanen, who played in Mestis earlier in the season. Huhtanen first signed a two-week trial contract with Ässät, but later he got a contract lasting the rest of the season.
