The 2017 season was the club's eleventh season of existence, and fourth in the United Premier Soccer League. Winds FC began play in the inaugural UPSL Pro Division in March 2017.

Fall 2017 UPSL & Open Cup Squad[edit]

Competitions[edit]

2018 U.S. Open Cup Qualifying[edit]

On August 29, 2017, the United States Soccer Federation announced the drawings of Open Division teams participating in qualifying rounds for the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Santa Ana Winds FC drew Huntington Beach-based club Outbreak Soccer of the So Cal Premier League, in the first round.[1] Winds FC defeated Outbreak Soccer by a score of 5-2 on Saturday, September 23 at the Lake Forest Sports Park.

Winds FC drew fellow UPSL club, Newcastle United FC for the second round of Open Cup qualifying, played on October 21, and defeated them by a score of 6-0.

On November 18, Winds FC made club history by qualifying to their first U.S. Open Cup by defeating San Pedro Monsters FC, of the So Cal Premier League.

2017 Fall UPSL Season[edit]

Fall Preseason[edit]

Santa Ana Winds FC scheduled preseason matches against UCLA, La Máquina and Orange County Football Club winning two and losing one, in tune ups to an Open Cup qualifying match with Outbreak Soccer.[2][3]

2017 Spring UPSL Season[edit]

The 2017 UPSL Pro Premier season is the inaugural tournament of this newly established division, which functions a tier above, and in conjunction with the new UPSL Championship Division, through promotion and relegation.

2017 USASA Region IV Cup: Cal South Track[edit]

Winds FC entered 2017 United States Adult Soccer Association Region IV tournament qualifying, via the local Cal South State Cup in April 2017. Three group stage games were played in April, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals played in late April and May. Winds FC were placed in Cal South Group A, with San Nicolás FC, FC Strikers South Coast and Real Sociedad Royals, and finished at the top of the group.

Winds FC fell to defending USASA Region IV Champion, Moreno Valley FC, in quarterfinals, and finished their 2017 Cal South State Cup record with 2 wins and 2 losses.

2017 Spring Preseason[edit]

Winds FC faced 2016 & 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup entrants L.A. Wolves FC, under Wolves head coach Eric Wynalda, in a preseason match that Winds FC won by a score of 2-1, on Sunday, February 18.

2017 US Open Cup Qualifying[edit]

Winds FC won one qualifying match to the 2017 US Open Cup over fellow UPSL club La Habra City FC, but ultimately did not qualify to the first round of the Open Cup after falling to another UPSL club, La Máquina FC. Both matches were played in late 2016.[4]

2106-17 Fall / Winter Season Playoffs[edit]

Winds FC defeated La Máquina FC at Santa Ana Stadium by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 but fell to Strikers FC South Coast in their second playoff match thus concluding their Fall/Winter 2016-17 season.
