The 2018 Galway Intermediate Football Championship is Galway GAA's gaelic football tournament for intermediate graded clubs in County Galway, Ireland.

16 Teams competed in this years competition which was won by An Spidéal who were promoted to play in the 2019 Senior Championship. They also went on to represent Galway in the Connacht Intermediate Club Football Championship. Three teams were relegated to next years Junior competition.

Claregalway were last years winners, beating Williamstown in the final.[1]

The following teams have changed division since the 2017 championship season.


Format[edit]

Group Stage[edit]

2018 saw a new format for the competition where there were 4 groups of 4 teams.

Four teams were seeded. The three unpromoted semi finalists from the previous years competition together the team relegated from the Senior grade, with one placed in each of the groups. The remaining 12 teams were placed in their groups by way of an open draw.

The top two teams in each group qualified for the Knockout stage Quarter Finals.

The Bottom two teams in each group were to enter the Relegation Playoffs.

Knockout Stage[edit]

Quarter Finals will be an open draw where top placed group teams will play 2nd Placed group teams. However teams cannot be paired with the other team who qualified from their group. Extra Time will be played in these games if required.

Semi-Finals will be an open draw Replays to be played in the Semi-Finals & Final if required. No Extra Time will be played in these games. [4]

Relegation Playoff[edit]

The four Third placed teams will play off against each other. these games will be decided by an open draw. The two winners will retain Intermediate status for 2019.

The two losers will join the four fourth placed teams in the Groups for the final series of play-off relegation games.

There will be two groups of three, with one of the third placed teams placed in each Group. There is an open draw for the fourth placed teams.

Rd 2: Loser of 1 v 2 plays 3
Rd 3: Winners of 1 v 2 plays 3

The top teams in each group retains their Intermediate status for 2019.

The two bottom teams in the groups are relegated to Junior for 2019.

The two second placed teams in the Relegation Groups will then play each other, with the loser being the third team to be relegated to Junior for 2019 and the winner retaining their Intermediate status.

Knockout Stage[edit]

The Knockout stages will see eight teams compete. The four Group winners along with the four group runners up. Group winners will be drawn to play against a runner-up.

Open Draw to take place between the 4 groups 3rd placed teams. The two winners retaining Intermediate status for next years competition, and the losers then competing in the Relegation Group Stage.

Victories for both Oughterard and St. Gabriels means that they retained their intermediate status for next years competition. Williamstown and Kilkerrin/Clonbern entered the relegation group stage.


Relegation Group Stage[edit]

Kilkerrin/Clonbern and Williamstown top their groups and retain their Intermediate status. Glenamaddy and St Brendans finished bottom of their groups and will be relegated to compete in next years Junior competition. The two groups second placed teams, Athenry and Cárna-Caiseal, went into a relegation playoff game.
