The January 13, 2020, Montreal Earthquake occurred with a moment magnitude of 3.4 along the Canada-US Border.[1] The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0 on the Nuttli scale, a version of the Richter scale used in eastern North America.[3] [4] No injuries or property damage were reported,[1][4] as expected with a small earthquake.[4]

The strongest earthquake to hit Montreal was in 1732 with a Richter scale magnitude of 5.8.[2]

The Insurance Bureau of Canada estimated in 2013 that an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 along the St-Lawrence fault line would cause CAD 60 billion in damage.[5]
