On March 20, 2018 an earthquake occurred near the Mexican city of Cuajinicuilapa in the state of Guerrero. According to the United States Geological Survey, it had a magnitude of M 5.2.[1]
Another quake of a magnitude of M 4.4 had hit the vicinity of Cuajinicuilapa during February 2018.[2]
The region is prone to earthquakes, because of it being part of the eastern Pacific subduction zone.[3] This concerns especially parts of the Mexican state of Guerrero, were some really heavy earthquakes have occurred these last years (see e.g. the M7.2 2014 Guerrero earthquake) and geologists predict more of them in the years to come.[4] The region is also called the Guerrero Seismic Gap.[5] (la Brecha de Guerrero).[4]
