The Cooma air tanker crash occurred on January 23, 2020, in which a Lockheed C-130 Hercules firefighting aircraft contracted to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service crashed near Cooma, northeast of the Snowy Mountains in Australia. The aircraft was operated by Coulson Aviation under contract to the NSW Rural Fire Service.[1]
All three crew members on board the aircraft died in the accident. The crew had been tasked with a fire retardant drop over the 'Adaminaby Complex' bush fire, but the drop was unable to be completed and the aircraft was diverted to a secondary tasking.[2]
Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft complete a number of circuits prior to completing the retardant drop. Following the drop, the aircraft was observed to bank left before colliding with terrain and bursting into flames.
