On July 27, 2022, historic flooding began in Kentucky, with the Governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, declaring a state of emergency saying “We are currently experiencing one of the worst, most devastating flooding events in Kentucky's history.”[3] At least 8 people have been killed with multiple others still missing.[4][5]
Meteorological synopsis[edit]
On July 27, 2022, large thunderstorms began in portions of Eastern Kentucky and Southwest Virginia which resulted in a series of deadly floodings.
On the morning of July 28, 2022, the Weather Prediction Center issued a moderate risk outlook for excessive rainfall over portions of Central and Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia.[6][7]
Impact[edit]
Governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, declared a state of emergency on July 28.[8][9][10][11] The Kentucky Court of Justice closed the judicial centers in Floyd, Letcher, Magoffin & Perry counties due to the extreme flooding.[12]
Cities severely affected by the floods include in Kentucky, Hazard, Harlan, Paintsville, Prestonsburg, Pikeville, Whitesburg, Fleming-Neon, and Jenkins, and in Virginia, Pound, Clintwood, Wise, Norton, Haysi, and Coeburn. Many roads were shut down in these areas including Main St in Hazard, Mayo Trail in Pikeville, KY-317 in Fleming-Neon, Lakeside Dr, and Main St in Jenkins, S Fork Road, S Mountain Rd, Bold Camp Rd, and Main St in Pound, and portions of US-23 in Wise. Evacuations were ordered in cities that were severely flooded in the Downtown areas, those cities are, Hazard, Fleming-Neon, Jenkins, Pound, And Clintwood as they were the cities most affected by the floods.[citation needed]
