The Gaza Strip has faced a severe crisis of premature births during the Israel–Hamas war. The situation escalated during the raids on Al-Shifa Hospital, Al-Nasr Children's Hospital, and Kamal Adwan Hospital by the Israeli Defense Forces. These actions led to increased concerns about the rising number of preterm births in Gaza.[2] The plight of these newborns has garnered global attention.[3]

Background[edit]

Starting on 21 October, Medical Aid for Palestinians and UNICEF issued urgent warnings about the imminent danger to 130 premature babies due to fuel shortages in Gaza hospitals.[4]

Al-Shifa Hospital[edit]

On 11 November, the IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari stated the army's intention to help evacuate babies from Al-Shifa Hospital. However, a Gaza Health Ministry spokesman reported that Israel did not provide any mechanism to safely evacuate the babies.[5] On 19 November, 31 premature babies were evacuated to southern Gaza, with plans to move them to Egypt.[6]

Al-Nasr Children's Hospital[edit]

On 10 November, Doctors Without Borders reported that medical workers had to leave premature babies in incubators at Al-Nasr Children's Hospital after an IDF bombing.[7] On 29 November, video footage showed five dead premature babies at Al-Nasr, confirming the deaths.[8]

Rise in preterm births[edit]

The number of premature births in Gaza has increased due to stress and trauma. In February 2024, the UN Population Fund reported that anxiety and incessant bombings led to a rise in premature births.[9]

Destruction of embryos[edit]

A single strike on Gaza City's Al Basma IVF center destroyed most of the frozen IVF embryos in the Gaza Strip, including 4000 human embryos and 1000 samples of frozen sperms and eggs.[10]
