Gal Abdush
Gal Abdush (Hebrew: גל עבדוש) was an Israeli Jewish woman from Kiryat Ekron, presumed to have been killed by paramilitary forces from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, during the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel. She has been referred to as "the woman in the black dress" (Hebrew: האישה בשמלה השחורה) due to a video of her taken after her murder which, despite criticism including by her own sister that the video is inconclusive, has been used as purported evidence of an example of sexual and gender-based violence in the 7 October attack on Israel.
Abdush was 34, a mother of two. She and her husband, Naji (Hebrew: נאג'י) Abdush, 36, had been at the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists attacked. They tried to escape on Route 232.[1]
Video[edit]
A video reviewed by the New York Times included "a woman in a black dress lying on her back, dress torn, legs spread, vagina exposed" with her face completely charred, whom Israeli police officials believed to have been raped.[2] The Times and Israeli authorities identified the woman as Gal Abdush.
Reaction[edit]
Gal Abdush's mother Etti Brakha (Hebrew: אתי ברכה), stated “We didn’t know about the rape at all. We only knew after a New York Times journalist contacted us. They said they matched evidence and concluded that she had been sexually assaulted.”[3]
Abdush's sister Miral Alter spoke out later on social media, stating that the video of her sister shows no evidence of rape, nor does she feel there is any reason to suspect rape, as opposed to, for example, Gal having been blown back by an exploding grenade.[4]
