In April 2023, nine Pakistani Umrah pilgrims, including women and children, died in a vehicle accident in Saudi Arabia. The incident happened in the Al Qasim region when the victims were travelling from Medina to Riyadh after completing their Umrah pilgrimage.[1][2]

Background[edit]

The casualties, according to media accounts, were people who lived in the nearby Pakistani villages of Islamnagar and Chak 18 in Nankana Sahib. Shahbaz, Maria, Zulfiqar, Umme Ammarah,Hareem, Haram, Tehreem, Daood, Fatima and Abuzar were among the people who died.[3]

The accident occurred only a few weeks after another fatal bus accident on 28 March 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 20 Umrah pilgrims and the injuries of 29 others. In the earlier incident, brake failure caused the bus to crash into a bridge, tip over, and catch fire in the province of Asir.[4]

Reactions[edit]

Following the accident, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his sorrow and grief over the loss of lives. He also directed the Pakistan embassy in Saudi Arabia to provide all possible assistance to the affected families. The Prime Minister prayed for those who died and for the early recovery of the injured.[5]
