On 25 May 2024, at least 33 people were killed in a fire that broke out at a gaming zone in Rajkot, Gujarat, India.[2] The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.[3]
Background[edit]
The amusement park was built in 2024 in temporary structures with tin roofs and two floors. The buildings lacked sufficient fire extinguishers and emergency exits. Moreover, it did not possess the required certification from the fire department.[4]
Incident[edit]
On the evening of 25 May, a fire started on the ground floor of the two-story building. The fire, reportedly caused by welding work, quickly spread due to high temperatures and the presence of flammable materials like diesel and petrol. There was only one exit on the first floor, and around 70 to 80 people were present during the fire.[5]
The fire resulted in the deaths of at least 33 people, including nine children, with another 26 people still missing.[6]
Investigation[edit]
Officials announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will investigate the incident. The owner and manager of the gaming zone were arrested, and FIRs were placed against six employees. Police stated the owner operated the establishment without a fire department permit, and both he and the manager were charged with “negligence that led to deaths”.[1]
Aftermath[edit]
Following the incident, the Gujarat DGP ordered inspections of all gaming zones in the state and directed police to close those operating without fire safety permits. Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel visited the scene and met with victims in hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and prayers for the victims.[1]
