This two bedroom, one bathroom, in the small town of Gary, Indiana once housed Joseph Jackson and Katherine Jackson. The couple moved from East Chicago, Indiana in January 1950.[1] The same year, on May 29, Katherine gave birth to their first child; Mauereen Reillette Jackson.[2] And by 1966, they've had 8 more children. By this time, Kathrine and Joseph had a bedroom, the boys had two sets of bunk bed's in the other, and the girls slept on the living room couch.
By 1964, Michael and Marlon Jackson joined their older brothers in a band that was already formed by Joseph. In 1965, Michael became the groups lead singer along with his older brother, Jermaine and they would rehearse regularly in the living room. In 1966, the group began to tour the Midwest in a variety of clubs known as the Chitlin' Circuit.[3] In 1968, a record label in Gary by the name of Steeltown Records released their debut single, "Big Boy".[citation needed] The family moved from Gary to Encino, Los Angeles, California in 1971 after Joseph purchased a 5 bedroom, 7 bathroom mansion by the name of Hayvenhurst.
On June 11, 2003, Michael Jackson made a surprise visit back to his hometown. There he visited his birthplace and claimed that it was much smaller that he remembered it to be. He also visited Roosevelt High School and was gifted the Key of the city. Jackson visited the city's town hall, The Salvation Army store and more.[4]
In 2017, Randy and Janet Jackson visited their childhood home in Gary, Indiana. Janet stated that it was her first time at the house since she was eight years old.[5]
In 2021, a sign was placed in the houses yard that reads, "Home of The World-Famous, Jackson 5.[6]
