On the morning of 23 January 2024, as part of the Russian invasion of Ukraine Russian troops launched a missile attack on Ukraine,[1] using сruise and ballistic missiles. Ukrainian Air Defence Forces shot down 21 missiles out of 41. Kyiv, Kharkiv, Pavlograd, Balakliia and Shostka were shelled.[2]
Course of events[edit]
12 Tu-95MS aircraft launched Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea. Later, Tu-22M3 bombers took off and also launched cruise missiles.
The first groups of rockets flew over Sumy Oblast. After the maneuvers over Vinnytsia Oblast and Zhytomyr Oblast, most of them flew to Kyiv. Air defense was working there and explosions were heard.
Kharkiv was hit by S-300/S-400 missiles from Belgorod region of Russia.

According to the Head of city, Vitali Klitschko, 18 people were injured in the rocket attack. 13 people were hospitalized, including three children. A 13-year-old boy and four adults were treated at the scene.[3]
In Solomianskyi District, the Ukrzaliznytsia "Lokomotiv" sports complex was damaged. One person was injured.[4]
Kharkiv[edit]

Before the launch of the cruise missiles, at about 5 A.M. in the morning, Russia struck Kharkov with a ballistic missile, there was a series of explosions. After 7 A.M. the strikes on Kharkiv repeated.[5]
It is known about the impact of Kh-22, Iskander and S-300 missiles on residential buildings in the Kyivskyi and Saltivskyi districts.[6] One of the most massive enemy attacks on the city took place, more than 15 S-300, Kh-22 and Iskander missiles were spotted, more than 70 people were injured as a result of the strikes, 11 were killed.[7][8]
Serhiy Bolvinov, the head of the police of the Kharkiv Oblast, reported on the fire at the gas pipeline.[5]
Balakliia[edit]
As a result of the rocket attack, a civil infrastructure object, an apartment building and private houses were damaged.[5][9]
Pavlograd[edit]
Serhii Lysak reported that a 43-year-old woman who was in one of the city's public squares during the attack was killed. Infrastructure, 2 schools and 8 high-rise buildings are damaged.[10]
Shostka[edit]

Shostka was hit by a rocket aimed at the city's infrastructure. So far, there are no casualties.[11]

The United States Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, after the last Russian missile strikes, said that "Ukraine needs further support from the West right now".[19]
