From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The 369 Newspaper or 369 Small Newspaper (Chinese: 三六九小報) was a periodic publication during the Japanese rule period from 1930 to 1935. It was written primarily in Classical Chinese, but often combining Vernacular Chinese, encompassing poetry, prose, short stories, and even comics. It avoided political subjects and issues, positioning itself as a newspaper focused on leisure.

Published on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 23rd, 26th, and 29th of each month, with a total of 9 issues per month, it was aptly named "369."[1] The word "small newspaper" was a deliberate contrast to the large newspapers of the time, which were often serious and political in nature. The paper's goal was to be humorous and satirical to express social commentary.[2]

Launched on September 9, 1930, by members of the Nan Poetry Society (南社) and the Chunying Poetry Society (春鶯社) in Tainan, Chao Yafu (趙雅福) served as the 369 Newspaper’s editor and publisher. On September 6, 1935, the 369 Newspaper ceased publication after a five-year run, totaling 479 issues.[3] The contributing authors were mainly traditional literati from the Tainan region.[4]

The content predominantly featured classical Chinese poetry, prose, and fiction, with columns such as "Poetry Hall" (詩壇), "Daishan Woodcutter's Songs" (黛山樵唱), and "Selected Classics" (古香雜拾). These columns expressed emotions, praised various subjects, and documented travels.[5]Other sections, such as "East Scale West Claw" (東鱗西爪) and "Short Messages from Overseas" (海外零訊) covered international news. The newspaper also featured entertainment and leisure news related to sports, hobbies, peculiar individuals, and human-interest stories. Additionally, it included content on food and drink, jokes, trivia, and short recipes, providing a mix of practical knowledge and recreational articles.[6]
