Complete Taiwanese Poems
Complete Taiwanese Poems is a comprehensive anthology of classical Taiwanese poetry that has been collected, compiled and published by the National Museum of Taiwan Literature since 2001. It brings together classical poems from various periods, from the House of Koxinga, through the Qing and Japanese reigns, to the post-war period.
In 2001, the museum's predecessor, the National Cultural Heritage Preservation Research Center and Preparatory Office of the National Museum of Taiwan Literature under the Executive Yuan's Council for Cultural Affairs, initiated the project of "Collecting, compiling, editing, and publishing the Complete Taiwanese Poems.” Professor Shih Yi-lin (施懿琳) of the Department of Chinese Literature at National Cheng Kung University was appointed as the project director. In addition, a number of academic scholars of Taiwanese classical literature, as well as folk poet Huang Che-yung (黃哲永), participated in collecting and organizing this anthology.[1][2]
The publication of Complete Taiwanese Poems aims to compile and systematically preserve Taiwan's literary heritage for retrieval, reference, and research. It includes all poems written by native Taiwanese, as well as those who came to Taiwan and wrote poetry either in or after leaving Taiwan. It collects only Gushi (古體詩 ancient poems), Chintishi (近體詩 regulated verse), Tsati (雜體 experimental and variant forms), and Yuehfu (folk songs), and excludes Tzu (詞), Chu (曲), Fu (賦), and Ming (銘 inscriptions).
The principle of the compilation is to use the "poets as anchors for the poems." The poets are generally arranged according to their birth order. Under each poet's name is a "digest," which is a brief biography. There are also footnotes explaining the differences between versions and the sources of the poems.[3]To facilitate research, a database was created in 2003 and has been continuously updated. In recent years, it has been expanded into the "Taiwanese Classic Poetry Collection" database, incorporating all paper publications.[4]
