Background[edit]

Radhakrishnan was born on 25 January 1960 to B. R. Narayana Pillai and Pankajakshi at Cheranallur, Kochi in Kerala, India. At the age of 14, he joined the Lok Sangharsha Samithi, taking part in the agitation against the Emergency.[1][2] He was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.[1] At the age of 19, he became a pracharak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). For the next five years he worked as a RSS pracharak among the lower, middle, and working-class communities in Kannur and Malappuram districts. He was later made the Ernakulam district convener of Hindu Munnani. In 1987, he was appointed as the Ernakulam district secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).[3]

In the coming years, he was appointed in several organisational positions, including the state vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, BJP Ernakulam district president, zonal president, Kerala state secretary, Kerala state secretary general, and national executive committee member. Radhakrishnan has been the main organiser of various padayatra's of BJP in the state and is in the forefront of various agitations.[2] From 3 December 2018, he observed hunger strike protesting to lift the imposition of curfew under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) at Sabarimala temple and surrounding areas. Section 144 prohibits assembly of more than four people in an area. After 8 days, he was arrested and shifted to a hospital as his health deteriorated.[4][5]

Elections[edit]

Radhakrishnan contested in the 2009 Indian general election in Kerala for electing the members of the 15th Lok Sabha, as a candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ernakulam constituency. He lost to K. V. Thomas but managed to gain 52968 votes, coming in third position.[6] In the 16th Lok Sabha election in Kerala, he again contested as a BJP candidate from Ernakulam constituency. Even though he again lost to K. V. Thomas, Radhakrishnan's vote share increased from 7.11 percent of 2009 election to 11.6 percent, coming in third position with 99003 votes.[7] For the upcoming 2019 Indian general election in Kerala for the 17th Lok Sabha, the BJP has selected Radhakrishnan as their candidate to contest from the Chalakudy constituency.[8]
