The U-16 Youth League is a premier football league for Youth teams in India, conducted by AIFF.[1] All I-League Under-16 teams, ISL and some academy U16 teams participate in this tournament. Minerva Academy F.C. are the current champion.[2]

History[edit]

In December 2013 India have been awarded hosting rights of 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. To increase pool of players for selection to national team All India Football Federation in 2015 started the Youth League. The league in its first edition started as under-15 Youth League.[1] More than 30 teams from I-League,I-League 2nd Division and some academies participated in first edition.Minerva Academy F.C. overcome Royal Wahingdoh F.C. 4-3 in penalties to crowned as first champions of AIFF Youth League.[2]

In 2016-17 number of teams increased to 55.

Current structure[edit]

Teams are divided into geografical zonal groups. The teams from every zone will play on a home-away basis among themselves in the round robin stage and 16 teams will qualify to the National Final Round eventually. Those sixteen teams will be divided into four groups and the group champions will qualify for the semi-final which will be followed by the final to decide the U-16 Youth League 2016-17 champions.
