AI War: 2 is a Grand Strategy-RTS game developed and published by Arcen Games. It is a sequel to AI War: Fleet Command. It was released in 2019 after one year in early access.[2][3] The game was initially announced on Kickstarter in 2016.[4]. The game has the player control a human empire that must take back the galaxy from a powerful Artificial Intelligence.[5] The game can be played single-player or with online cooperative multiplayer.[6]

Gameplay[edit]

Similar to its predecessor, AI War 2 is a strategy game where the player starts on a single planet and must defeat a powerful Artificial Intelligence that has taken over a galaxy.[7] Other factions besides the human and AI can also be enabled optionally, each with their own units and behavior. These factions can be allies or enemies to the player. The player can also summon Outguard groups to fight for them. The player is also able to configure the type of map they wish to play on.[3]

During the course of the game, the player controls thousands of ships, each of which belongs to a ship line which is assigned to a fleet. Lines of ships can be added by stealing from the AI using hacking points or by capturing planets with fleet carriers containing ship lines. A ship line holds a certain number of ships that can be increased by upgrading technology by spending science points. As ships are destroyed in combat, they are automatically replaced so long as the fleet is near a factory, player has enough resources, and the transport vessel has not taken so much damage that it became disabled. The ships in a fleet can be loaded in to the transport vessel to quickly transport ships across the map. [8]

While building up fleets and defenses to take on the AI Homeworld, the player must manage AI Points(AIP). AIP is a measure of how much attention the AI is paying to the human faction and in gameplay terms, means how much strong the waves of attacks are against the player. Certain actions like capturing planets raises AIP while others like destroying data centers or capturing certain objectives will lower it. The player must make thoughtful decisions on what planets to capture so as to not raise the AIP faster than they themselves grow in ability to defend their assets.[5]

Expansions And Updates[edit]

The Spire Rises[edit]

The first expansion for AI War 2 was The Spire Rises, released on February 27th, 2020. The expansion added two new factions, updates to existing factions, new turrets and ships, new Ark ships which can take the place of transport vessels, and new music.[9]

Version 2.800 "The Paradigm Shift Update"[edit]

Version 2.800 was released on April 14, 2021 as a free update. It was referred to as The Paradigm Shift Update in the release notes. This update reduced the RNG and made the game slightly easier. [10] The update also added the ability to refund science points and added more targets to spend hacking points on. The method of unlocking new turrets was switched out from Global Command Augmenters, which gave a set of turret lines at once with Turret Schematic Servers and Other Defense Schematic Server which can be hacked multiple times to get one line of turret or other defense each time. The update also made various UI and Quality of Life changes.[1]

Zenith Onslaught[edit]

The Zenith Onslaught expansion, released on May 18, 2021, added 3 new minor factions, new ships, and the Nomad planets feature. Nomad planets, which can be enabled optionally, will move around the galaxy map changing their connections to other planets. This adds a new level of depth since isolated planets can gain new connections and well-connected planets can become more isolated.[11]

Version 4.0[edit]

Version 4.0 was released as a free update on March 4, 2022. It introduced campaign types, new map types, an in-game ship encyclopedia, as well as general performance improvements, quality of life improvements, balance updates, and improved mod support. Some of the content was exclusive to those that own the previous DLCs.[12]

The Neinzul Abyss and Version 5.000[edit]

The release of the Neinzul Abyss expansion coincided with the v5.000 update on April 22, 2022.[13] The Neinzul Abyss expansion added the Necromancer faction. This is a playable faction as an alternative to the default human faction. The expansion also adds 6 new NPC factions, new ships, new map types, new AI Archetypes. [14] In a blog post, the lead developer, Chris Park, said that the release of update 5.000 and Neinzul Abyss would be the last major content update for AI War 2.[13]

Reception[edit]

AI War 2 received a score of 75 on Metacritic.[15] It has been praised for automating some of the busywork from the previous game with the introduction of the fleet system.[8] The barrier to entry has been described as lower than the previous game.[3]

The game has been criticized for its high difficulty and lack of variation between different ships.[16]
