ALTAVE is a Brazilian aerospace manufacturer that develops tethered balloons such as aeronautical platforms for use in intelligence, video monitoring, reconnaissance and telecommunications.[1][2] applications in large urban or remote areas.[3] The company was founded by two engineers at the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA) in March 2011. Its headquarters is located in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, and also has an office at the Parque Tecnológico de São José dos Campos, in São José dos Campos, São Paulo.

ALTAVE is the only manufacturer of tethered balloons in the Southern Hemisphere, being able to develop its own anchorage system and patent it in the US.

Tethered balloons are seen as an innovative solution because they have the longest capability of staying in flight and lower cost of flight time [4] - making them strategic products for Defense, Public Safety and Environmental Monitoring, and are applicable in Agribusiness, Oil and Gas, Mining and Construction sectors.

In 2016 ALTAVE gained international prominence for the successful installation of four balloons for large areas persistent monitoring in the RIO2016 Summer Olympic Games [5][6][7][8][9]. Its solutions were also present in major events such as the Carnivals of Rio de Janeiro and Recife, the FIFA Confederations Cup and the Copa Libertadores, in addition to having participated in several operations with the Brazilian Army and Military Police in border regions and critical infrastructures.

History

Foundation

The idea of ALTAVE arose when the two founders of the company, Bruno Avena and Leonardo Nogueira, who while still students at the ITA, came in contact with balloons and blimps technology. Leonardo came in contact during an academic program in Germany and Bruno during the same academic program, but in France, and later on an internship at NASA, in the United States.

Soon they realized that the development of these tools in Brazil would be the great entrepreneurial opportunity they were looking for.

In 2010, the first project created by them, which used free flight balloons as well as tethered balloons to bring telecommunication services to remote regions, was a semi-finalist in the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Award. ALTAVE has since won other awards for similar solutions.[10][11]

The two engineers founded ALTAVE on March 2, 2011. On the same year, they gained permission to build the company on a business incubator located in the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (DCTA), in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil.

Soon after they settled in DCTA, they obtained grants in the RHAE Program of CNPq and PIPE, of FAPESP, to continue developing the project.

Also in 2011, from the contact with the Associação Brasileira das Indústrias de Materiais de Defesa e Segurança (ABIMDE) - a Brazilian defense and security association, they began to develop balloons for defense and security. The first viability tests were performed on two free flight balloons and on one tethered balloon, concluding that the tethered balloon was the best option for this objective.

With resources obtained from two angel investors, ALTAVE developed the first prototype of a tethered balloon in 2013, which were tested to fulfill the monitoring of the Rio Carnival and environmental monitoring actions, in partnership with the Military Police of São Paulo.

Still in 2013 the balloons were also used in the final match of the Confederations Cup in Rio de Janeiro. Following this path, the solutions were again employed in 2014 in the Copa Libertadores final match. These experiences guaranteed authority to ALTAVE in order to qualify as a supplier of balloons for the security of Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, which came to be true, after winning the international bidding, where they competed with the North American company TCOM, the world leader in the segment, and Safran, the largest aeronautical company in France. They signed a contract of 24 million reais.

Following the success of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the company released ALTAVE EXPLORER, considered an evolution of that used in the Olympics - simpler to handle, with a lower operating cost, and installed and operated with a single person.

Olympic Games RIO2016

ALTAVE gained international notoriety due to its performance in the RIO2016 Olympics[12][13][14], debuting the ALTAVE OMNI system, which was considered a key resource for security during the Games. Four captive balloons flew 200 meters above ground in Rio de Janeiro with the capability of monitoring 360º wide areas with simultaneous high-definition images. They were deployed in the four Olympic great areas: Maracanã, Barra, Copacabana and Deodoro, covering a total area of 160 km² ( corresponding to 13% of the city area).

With concerns related to terrorism and crime, especially due to the international events that occurred at the time, ALTAVE's solution was selected by the responsible authorities for the security of the Olympics because of its ability to prevent, detect and quickly investigate suspicious acts.

The systems were operated by security force teams, which participated in a training program run by ALTAVE. During the training period, the system and operators were confronted with real-life situations, preparing them to operate at full capacity when the Olympics arrived.

Partnership with Airstar Aerospace

On June 21, 2017, ALTAVE officialized a partnership[15] during the Paris Air Show with French company Airstar Aerospace, a leading French manufacturer of airships, allowing the companies to reach potential world market leadership for tethered balloons market. This industrial partnership consists of the introduction of ALTAVE's tactical aerostats and Intelligent Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) solutions in the Airstar Aerospace portfolio, with licensing and certification of these solutions for the European market. Thus, Airstar Aerospace becomes ALTAVE's exclusive distributor in Europe[16][17]

Patent and CE Marking

In 2018, already patented in Brazil, a US patent was acquired for the mooring system; and the CE Marking was obtained [16] after it was established that ALTAVE's products met European safety, health and environmental protection requirements and were allowed to be marketed throughout Europe. At the present moment, ALTAVE continues to innovate with its solutions and to expand its market action, both nationally and internationally, having recently been inserted in the European market, through a partnership with a French company that is a reference in the world of lighter-than-air solutions.
