ARV Sculling

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Antwerp Rowing Association, abbreviated ARV or ARV Sculling, is a Belgian rowing club active on Hazewinkel.

It was founded in 1945 and has since been active in Wijnegem on the Albert Canal. It has an extensive international record of achievements. However, the great economic success of the Albert Canal has made rowing impossible there. Since the nineties of the 20th century, ARV is located in the Sport Vlaanderen domain Hazewinkel.

The name used to be Antwerp Sculling Club. Today one still uses 'Sculling', but the abbreviation A.R.V. is also common.

With the duo Knuysen - Baetens, Belgium won, for the first time in many years, a silver medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki in the two without helmsman. It would not be until the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles that Belgian rowers were again rewarded with medals (Ann Haesebrouck and Crois-De Loof). Antwerp Sculling of ARV won the Thames Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. Together with the Koninklijke Roeivereniging Club Gent, they are the only Belgian clubs to win this unofficial world championship for homogeneous club eights. The ARV team of that time was fully present at the homage to the KRCG team in the clubhouse in Ghent in 2001. ARV used to be the organiser of the Golden Oars or Golden Belts. That was a very popular race for eights with helmsman on the Albert Canal. Since 1999, ARV has annually organised the Open Belgian Indoor rowing Championship (O.B.I.C. for short) in the Expohal in Deurne (part of Antwerp). This is the biggest Indoor rowing competition (here on Concept2) in the country. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the club has a new clubhouse with a boat shed at Hazewinkel near Willebroek. The club colours are white with a double red band.
