AX Semantics ("AX") is a German-based software vendor of natural language generation (NLG) software, that allows users to create written content from data, allowing content creators to scale their writing..[1].

To date, the software supports 110 languages[2], and is not limited to certain type of texts or domains[3].

In regard to the output quality of NLG Systems in general, Graefe et al. used the software to study readers perception of automated news, coming to the conclusion that "The results provide conservative estimates for the favorability of computer-written news."[4], in the same year this was used to power automated election reporting on the US presidential election with PollyVote[5]., which later got funding from Googles Digital News Initiative[6].

Since End of 2019, AX' software is being marketed globally as a SaaS tool to allow a hybrid (man + machine) type of content production[7], a design pattern that Gartner calls "Augmented Intelligence"[8]

History[edit]

The company was founded by Saim Alkan, from a predecessor company aexea, where the technology was used to scale the internal workforce of copywriters.

With the idea of giving everyone access to the underlying technology via a markup language [9], the company was awarded one of worlds 50 most innovative companies by Technology Review.[10]

In 2016, was founded as AX Semantics, and got venture capital from various German publishing houses to start its product development [11].

In 2019, AX raised capital from US Investor Plug and Play Tech Center and Airbridge Equity Partners, a Netherland-based VC fund,[12] to launch globally.

Natural Language Generation[edit]

AX Semantics offers their natural language generation (NLG) product in form of their web-based product, and in addition Managed Service Providers like hmmh (part of Serviceplan), Deloitte and uNaice[13] offer services various industry specific topics as Managed services.

The underlying technology uses AI to drive components like grammatical functions or data analysis, but is part of the "Data to Text" type of applications, in contrast to language model approaches like OpenAI's GPT[14], giving the user control over the output, but still requiring manual human input[15].

Ax Semantics offers integrations with a number of e-commerce platforms, which speaks to their business origins has historically been focussed on the automation of product descriptions from databases,[16] while since 2019 financial industry[17] is starting to use AX as well[18]

Competitors[edit]

According to Gartner's 2019 "Market Guide for NLG" the five "representative NLG vendors" are: Arria NLG, Automated Insights, AX Semantics, Narrative Science and Yseop.

In addition to those 5, for Data Analytics use cases, Forrester's "New Wave on Natural Language Generation For Analytics".[19] has IBM, Marlabs, Salesforce and SAP.

In the content marketing space, a Business Insider report[20] reports on successful use cases implemented by Automated Insights, AX Semantics, Narrative Science and Yseop.
