Aaron Berman
His Honor Maj. Aaron Zalman Berman (Lithuania, February 28, 1893 - unknown) was a South African senator and businessman of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry, who also served as a major in the Union Defense Force.
Berman was the son of S. Berman. He graduated from the University of Berlin. He was (apparently in South Africa) an a sworn appraiser and interpreter of many languages at the High Court of South AFrica, a member of the Cape Town City Council from 1932, and chairman of the Financial Committee there since 1951. In 1947, he was elected for the United Party to the provincial legislature for Cape Town-Casteel, but from 1959 he represented Green Point. In 1955, he became deputy leader of the UP in the provincial legislature, and in 1959 its leader. In 1960, he was appointed a senator.
Berman married Sarah Jane, daughter of C. Prisman, on August 23, 1920. They had one son and two daughters. He was interested in poliitics and civil affairs. In the early 1960s, the couple lived on 69 Bo-Orange Street, Oranjezicht.
