Hazrat ʿAbd al-Bārī al-Chāndgrāmī (Arabic: رئيس الحفاظ عبد البارئ الچاندگرامي بڑ حافظ صاحب‎, Bengali: আব্দুল বারী চান্দগ্রামী; died 8 December 1987), popularly known as Boro Hafez Saheb (Bengali: বড় হাফেজ সাহেব), was a Bengali Islamic scholar and khalifah of Allama Abu Yusuf Shah Muhammad Yaqub Badarpuri.

Early life and education[edit]

Abdul Bari saheb was born into a Bengali Muslim family in the village of Chandgram in Barlekha. From the age of six to the age of twelve, he did khidmat to Mawlana Qasim Saheb, serving him water during tahajjud and studying under him. He completed his hifz and dawrah at the Baraikandi Madrasah under Hafez Sultan Ahmad Saheb. After that, he went to the Karampur Madrasah to read under Hafez Mawlana Shah Abdur Rauf Karampuri Shahbazpuri and then to Badarpur to receive taaleem-e-quran from Allama Shah Yaqub Badarpuri. In 1961, when he went for Hajj, Boro Hafiz Saheb completed Quranic studies in Makkah al-Mukarramah under Qari Abbas al-Makki.

Career[edit]

Boro Hafiz Saheb started his career as a teacher in various places. He taught at the Saabghat Madrasa in Zakiganj for some time. He had also taught at Fatikali in Dharmanagar, northern Tripura. Later on, he established his own madrasah where he dedicated his life towards teaching Quran. It was named as the Chandgram Hafiziyyah Madrasah and initially began at a room in his house.

In 1972, during the Isaal-e-Thawab of Allama Yaqub Badarpuri in Alalpur, Raeesul Huffaz Abdul Bari Chandgrami was astounded by Abdur Rahman Barni saheb's speech and requested someone of his level to join the Chandgram Madrasah. Barni saheb said it will not be possible but Boro Hafiz Saheb became nachhor-banda and promised to pray for him during tahajjud. With Chandgrami saheb's khaas dua and Fultali saheb's ijaazat, Barni saheb left his position as principal of Rakhalganj Madrasah and became the superintendent of Chandgram Ibtedayi Madrasah.

Spiritual succession[edit]

Boro Hafiz saheb had attained ilm-e-zaher but realised that he needed to attain ilm-e-baten too so he came under the khidmat of Allama Abu Yusuf Shah Muhammad Yaqub Badarpuri Bundashili Urf Hatem Ali. He received the ijaazat-e-tareeqat in ilm-e-tasawwuf from his murshid and then returned to Chandgram.

Chandgrami sab's nephew Akbar Ali Chandgrami saheb stated that once when his uncle was on the way to perform tahajjud at a large masjid and saw cholera in the form of a human. Boro Hafiz Saheb asked who are you and they replied we are Cholera. Then Boro Hafiz Saheb told them to leave this village and that they are not welcome here. It was much later found out that many many people in the neighbouring village died because of cholera.

It was reported by the daughter of Mawlana Arjad Ali Saheb Patangrami of Beanibazar that her mother was really unwell. And so, Mawlana Arjad Ali went to visit Chandgrami saheb, who said why did break the aisle and let the water in. Arjad Ali saheb cried and told him the situation, and to make dua to Allah that his own hayaat is lowered in favour of his wife. Boro Hafiz Saheb asked him are you sure, and he said yes. It was later discovered that Arjad Ali's wife lived for another 12 years whilst he died 7 months after this incident.
