The Above The Rim brand started in 1989 in San Diego, California, as the first basketball-themed apparel brand not associated with a basketball shoe. It has evolved to a basketball and urban brand covering product categories including footwear, apparel and accessories. Shortly after graduating in 1988, Bob Capener, a former "Division I" player, who holds a University record for most three-point field goals attempted (151), parlayed his knowledge of the game and its players into this brand.

In 1991 the brand reported a $3 Million in revenue. Early May, 1992, the brand was sold to Reebok.[1][2] for an undisclosed amount, and after that they produced the first basketball sneakers of the brand. In that same year they signed the "Slam Dunk" contest winner "Dee" Brown as the first official brand ambassador, and they became a headlining sponsor of the "Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament", which was played in parking lots or closed-off public streets, so it was the definition of a Street Ball Tournament. A decade later, in 2002, Kenyon Martin and Baron Davis also became part of the team of ambassadors, as well as even Allen Iverson himself, who joined a few years later in 2005. Somewhere around 2010, the brand was purchased for an undisclosed amount from Reebok, by Collective Brands, Inc. [3], but since 2014, it is currently a subsidiary of Authentic Brands Group [4][5][6]
