Acme Tools

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Acme Tools is an American omni-channel retailer of tools and equipment for metalworking, woodworking, landscaping along with do-it-yourself tools with 70+ years of experience in the tool industry. The company is headquartered in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Aside from its online tool store, Acme Tools has 10 physical showrooms.[1] in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. Acme Tools also offers tool rentals through its physical as well as online rental store[2], Acme Rents along with repair and maintenance services at its select stores.

History[edit]

The first Acme Tools store, Acme Electric Motors, was opened in 1948 by George Kuhlman at Grand Forks, North Dakota. In 1962, his son, Daniel Kuhlman[3] joined the company who is now the president of the family-owned business.

The store started expanding with the addition of corded power tools to their catalog and the opening of a new retail location in Grand Forks in 1967. The second store was opened in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1976 with the new company slogan, “The Tool Crib of the North”.

In 1985, the company began a mail-order business for its woodworking machinery through advertisements printed in national trade magazines.

In 1999, “Tool Crib of the North” became one of the first of its kind to launch an online website in the tools and equipment category. Later that year, the online and catalog businesses were sold to Amazon[4]. For the next 10 years, the company spread its retail and distribution center locations across the Upper Midwest through the acquisition of multiple stores like Dakota Fastening, Puckett Tools etc.

After the expiry of the non-compete clause with Amazon, “The Tool Crib of the North” was rebranded as Acme Tools in 2010 and relaunched as an online website and catalog business[5]

Today, the company continues to follow its family-owned-business principles and is now being run by the second and third generations of the Kuhlman family.

Currently, Acme Tools has store locations in:

Corporate Headquarters[edit]

From the beginning, Acme Tools had been headquartered at Grand Forks, North Dakota. Later in 2015, the company announced the expansion of its headquarters to accommodate the rapid growth of the online business and the increase in its call center staff.

The new facility added 15,000 square feet to the existing headquarters[6]. It includes executive offices, board room, lunchroom, and a 35-person training room. The former warehouse area has been remodeled as parking and green spaces[7], and a larger warehouse has been built to accommodate the rapidly growing business.
