The Adana derby (Turkish: Adana derbisi) are the football matches that are played between Adanaspor and Adana Demir. The derby is played at the 5 Ocak Stadium, the venue that is a home ground for both.

Adana derby is the fifth most popular city derby in Turkey, after the 3 Istanbul derbies and the İzmir derby; Karşıyaka vs. Göztepe. The fans have a big rivalry between each other,[1] violence is not uncommon[2] as they contest the dominance of the city.[3][4][5]

Pre-game[edit]

Adana derby is nicknamed the 'El-kebabiko', for the kebab vendors surrounding the stadium before the game.

5 Ocak Stadium is located in the residential section of the downtown, where many minor streets lead to the stadium. Police shuts down the streets that connect the south of the stadium to the north. Adanaspor fans can only enter the stadium from south side, whereas Adana Demirspor enter from the north side.

Game Statistics[edit]

As of 21 March 2016, there have been 55 competitive meetings between the teams. Adanaspor have won 21 and Adana Demir 14, the remaining 20 games finishing as draws.[6][7]

The biggest victory have been to Adana Demir who have won 5–1 in 1995 at a 2.level game in the home fixture at 5 Ocak Stadium. The largest win for Adanaspor was 3-0, at an away fixture in 1989. Because of the withdrawal of Adanaspor from the competitions due to financial crisis, 4 derby games at the season of 2005-06 could not be played, and Adana Demir won them all by default.[8] Derbies used to attract around 20,000 spectators before the stadium seat reduction due to UEFA regulations. With the new stadium that is expected to be open by September'16 in Sarıçam district, the number of derby spectators may rise up to 33,000.
